Acer has announced the Liquid E1, a new mid-range smartphone in the Liquid series. It has a 4.5-inch (960 × 540 pixels) display and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor. It has a 5MP auto focus camera at the back with LED flash, 720p HD video recording. It also features a VGA front-facing camera. Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 rugged phone with 1 GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.1 announced

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Xcover 2, successor of the Galaxy Xcover that was introduced back in 2011. The Xcover 2 is water resistant to a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes with IP67 certification, and is also dust and sand proof. It has upgraded specifications including a 4.0-inch WVGA (480 × 800 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, 1 GHz dual-core processor and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It has a 5MP Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash, 720p video recording and VGA secondary camera. It also comes with a dedicated camera key. It has Samsung’s unique features such as S-Cloud, S Voice and Smart Stay. It comes with Cardio Trainer Pro workout application.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.2 OTA update now rolling out in India

Samsung has finally started rolling out the Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) update in India. The Samsung Galaxy S3 was launched in India in May last year running Android 4.0 ICS, and it got the Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) update in November last year. Lava Xolo X500 to be the first Intel Z2420 powered smartphone in India

Intel had launched the Z2420 reference platform for low to mid end devices at the International CES 2013 just a week back, and we are now starting to learn from a report on NDTV Gadgets that the first smartphone to use that platform in India would be the Lava XOLO X500. Lava had already released the XOLO X900 in collaboration with Intel, and it proved to be quite a success. Following that, the XOLO X500 is supposed to be Lava’s second Intel phone that is ready to be launched in the Indian market.

Samsung posts $27.2 billion profit with 4% QoQ growth in mobile

It’s the season of quarterly results and yearly financial analysis of most of the consumer electronics and product companies in the world and Samsung is no exception. We saw the brilliant Q1 results Apple had, and the promising results Nokia had, now it’s time for the Samsung results, which, as you might have guessed by now, is huge. Samsung Electronics, the company as a whole, which includes, mobile, semi conductor and consumer electronics, has posted a whopping 27.2 billion USD profit, with the mobile division driving the growth at 4% QoQ increase in revenues.

IDC: Samsung, Apple top Smartphone vendors in Q4 2012


Samsung and Apple are the leading Smartphone vendors by shipments in Q4 2012 and for the whole 2012, according to a report by Research Firm IDC (International Data Corporation). The worldwide mobile phone market grew 1.9% year-over-year in the Q4 2012 with shipments of 482.5 million, compared to 473.4 million units in the Q4 2011. HTC Desire U with 4-inch display, 1 GHz processor, Android 4.0 announced

HTC has announced Desire U, the company’s new budget Android smartphone in Taiwan. It has a 4.0-inch (800 x 480 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1 GHz processor and runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with HTC Sense UI similar to the Desire V was launched in India last year, but this has single SIM support. It has a 5MP auto focus camera at the back with LED Flash and comes with Beats audio support. Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 shows up in the wild

dday.it, an Italian site has managed to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 ahead of the MWC. First specifications of the Note 8.0 (GT-N5100) surfaced last week, and the Samsung CEO confirmed the Galaxy Note 8.0 for MWC 2013, earlier this week. The device in these grainy hands on images resembles the image that surfaced couple of days back, but this has a hardware home button, capacitive touch buttons for menu and back on either sides, similar to the Galaxy S3. Even this has a ear piece at the top, but the Samsung logo is present blow the ear piece instead of bottom. It would also have S Pen support according to previous rumors. Nokia Q4 2012 results out $585 million profit, 4.4 million Lumia handsets sold

Nokia just announced its financial results for the 4th quarter of 2012. The Finnish smartphone manufacturer  has raked in profits equivalent to $585 million over the course of the last three months of 2012. The company has had losses of $3 billion over 2012.

Carrier unlocking to be illegal in the United States starting January 26

It’s always hard to imagine how people are putting up with carrier restrictions in countries like the United States of America. While we Indians have been more than blessed with carrier independent phones from get go, it’s now apparently getting harder in the other side of the planet. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act(DMCA) had termed manual user level unlocking of phones illegal in October last year, but had provided a 90 day window for getting the phones unlocked. That 90 day window is getting over on January 26 this year, and from that day on, user unlocking of any phone will be termed illegal.

Apple reports $54.5 billion revenue in Q1 2013, 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads sold

Apple has reported record quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.1 billion, equivalent to $13.81 per diluted share in their earnings for the Q1 2013 that ended December 29, 2012. The company has reported 18% increase in revenue YoY. The international sales in this quarter is 61% of the quarter’s revenue. Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads, 12.7 million iPods and 4.1 million Macs during the quarter. Apple introduced the iPad mini and the new 4th generation iPad with A6X chip and lightning port in the last quarter.
