Airtel announced network transformation program – Project Leap last year, aimed at improving network quality. Later it launched a microsite so that all the customers can see the network coverage for voice, basic data services (2G) and high speed data services (3G/ 4G) in their regions. Today it has launched open network microsite under Project Leap that will allow customers to check if the Airtel mobile network in an area is excellent, good, moderate or non-existent, along with the status of corresponding sites serving the area – existing, required, being upgraded or forcibly shut down. Until recently you required an invite from a Reliance employee to get a Jio SIM card along with the purchase of a Lyf phone to get a 90 day trial with unlimited data, calls and SMS to the soon to be launched Jio 4G LTE network from Reliance. The company has kept the Jio preview offer exclusive to its own Lyf brand of handsets. Initially, these devices were only sold at Reliance Digital stores across the country but few days back we reported that Lyf handsets are being sold at non-Reliance stores in open market, and it was possible to get the Jio SIM card along with the handset purchase for free and no invite was required. In an interesting development today, the company has started sending out invites to users who had signed up on the Jio website which went live last week.

We have been testing Reliance Jio 4G network though the Jio lyf preview offer for the past few weeks on a Lyf Water 1 device and also the Lyf Flame 1 device. The Jio SIM cards are locked to Lyf devices at this point of time. We even managed to get hold a Jio sim from someone working for Reliance so that we could do some speed tests on the network on high end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, iPhone 6s Plus, Redmi Note 3, Lenovo Vibe X3 and more.. We managed to test the network in Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. We managed to test the upcoming VoLTE feature of the network too.

It has now launched the Jio.com website, which is now live for everyone. Previously it was restricted only to its employees internally. Airtel has launched its 4G LTE services in Sivakasi and Villupuram in Tamilnadu. It was the first operator to launch 4G in Tamilnadu back in June 2015. It was launched in Chidambaram, Sriperumbudur and Karaikudi in the state last month and is already available in Coimbatore, Erode, Hosur, Madurai, Pondicherry, Salem, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Trichy, Vellore, Cuddalore, Ambur, Rajapalayam, Kovilpatti, Periyanaicken-palayam (Tp), Namakkal and Gudiyatham.

Vodafone launched 4G services in Mysore and Bengaluru earlier this year, now it has announced that Vodafone SuperNet 4G has been rolled out across Karnataka benefiting over 72 lakh customers. It is based on 1800 MHz spectrum band and is supported by a strong backhaul of 3G network. Vodafone also announced that it has added more than 2000 cell sites across Karnataka to launch its 4G network in Bengaluru and Mysuru.

After launching its 4G LTE services or SuperNet 4G in 5 circles – Kerala, Karnataka, Mumbai, Delhi & NCR and Kolkata, Vodafone has announced that it will launch 4G services in Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal in the second phase of roll out. “The nine circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Karnataka, Kerala, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal, together contribute to just under 70% of Vodafone India’s data revenues,” said the company.
