The combined AR and VR headset market grew 9.4% year over year in the Q3 2018, according to the IDC. The VR headset market returned to growth in Q3 2018 after four consecutive quarters of decline and now makes up 97% of the combined market. Samsung and Verizon demonstrate 5G data transmission using 400MHz of mmWave spectrum
Samsung, Qualcomm, and Verizon have announced a successful 5G New Radio (NR) data connection using 400MHz of bandwidth in the 28GHz spectrum, resulting in maximum throughput of more than 1.7 Gbps. The data connection demonstrated the delivery of multi-gigabit 5G speeds to a smartphone form-factor mobile test device. Samsung has finally opened up Galaxy Note 9 One UI based on Android Pie beta after it by mistakenly opened registrations in the US last week. The beta testing is now rolling out in Germany and India. The registrations are now open through the Samsung Members app and the update is about 1.5GB in size. Worldwide Wearable shipments reach 32 million units, up 21.7% YoY in Q3 2018: IDC
According to IDC, the global shipments of wearable devices reached 32.0 million units in the Q3 2018, up 21.7% from the previous year. New products from the likes of Fitbit, Garmin, and Huawei helped the basic wearables category return to growth during the quarter. Another factor was the growing demand in markets like Asia which accounted for more than half of all shipments and grew 21.4% compared to the previous year. Samsung, Verizon team up to bring first commercial 5G smartphone early 2019
Verizon and Samsung announced that they will bring the first commercial 5G smartphone to the market in the first half of 2019. The companies will unveil a proof of concept, powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end, and antenna elements, at the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit later this week.
