Essential granted patent for smartphone with no-notch display, popup front camera

Vivo showcased the APEX concept phone with in-display fingerprint scanner, 98% screen-to-body ratio and most importantly an elevating front camera at the MWC 2018 event last week. The unique feature of the phone is the front-camera that seamlessly rises in 0.8 seconds when it is required and retracts after use. But it turns out, Andy Rubin of Essential was granted the patent for this solution to Essential Products, Inc in 2017. Worldwide wearable shipments up 10.3% YoY in 2017, Apple leads with 15.3% market share: IDC

According to IDC, the worldwide wearables market continued to grow in both the Q4 and whole of 2017 with the total shipments reaching a new record. Apple moved past Fitbit and Xiaomi to become the leader in the wearable market worldwide. The total volumes of the quarter reached 37.9 million units, which is up 7.7% from the 35.2 million units shipped YoY. Samsung Galaxy S9+ outshines Google Pixel 2 for the top spot on DxOMark

Worldwide smartphone shipments decline 0.5% first-time in 2017, expected to return to growth in 2018: IDC

According to the International Data Corporation’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone shipments worldwide have declined 0.5% in 2017 making it the first year-over-year decline in the market since the evolution of smartphones. A total of 1.46 billion devices were shipped in 2017 including both Android and iOS.
