Sony Mobile sales down 16.3% YoY, 7.2 million smartphones shipped in Q1 FY15

Sony Corporation has reported its revenues for first quarter of the financial year 2015 that ended June 30, 2015. Sales remained flat at 1,808.1 billion yen ( US$ (14,820 million) with just 0.1% decease compared to the same quarter last year. Sony shipped just 7.2 million smartphones in the quarter compared to 9.4 million in Q1 FY14.

Global tablet market declined 4% in Q2, 2015, compared to the previous quarter with shipments totaling 44.7 million units, as per a latest from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker.

Swipe announces online-only brand Elite, first smartphone coming in August

Swipe Telecom has announced a new online-only sub-brand called Elite, which will include premium smartphones. The first Elife series smartphones will be priced between Rs. 5,000 and Rs, 15,000, and the first Elite smartphone will launch in August, said the company.

Intel and Micron have debuted a new memory chip that can be used as non volatile memory as well as system memory. Dubbed as 3D XPoint, the technology is 1,000 times faster than the current-generation NAND flash chips upon which modern solid-state drives are built.

Fresh vulnerability detected by Trend Micro can render Android phones lifeless

Software security firm, Trend Micro, reports that it has found a fresh vulnerability in Android that affects more than half of the devices in use today. All the way up from Android 4.3 to Android 5.1.1, the vulnerability can render a phone practically dead. 

LG Q2 2015 profits down 60% YoY, 14.1 million smartphones shipped

LG Electronics has reported revenues of 13.99 trillion won (US$ 12.69 billion) in Q2 2015, which is 0.5% down compared to the same quarter last year with operating profit of 244.1 billion won (US$ 222.52 million), down 60% percent from the same period the previous year. Samsung introduces first 16MP camera sensor with 1.0 micron pixels for smartphones

Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of industry’s first 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor (S5K3P3) with 1.0μm-pixel size for high-end smartphones. This is smaller than the 1.12 micron-pixel based 16-megapixel sensor such as Sony IMX240 in the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge and Samsung’s own S5K2P8 sensor on the Galaxy S5.
