The Samsung Galaxy S2 Review : Awesomeness Inside

The Samsung Galaxy S II – successor of the popular Galaxy S and brand new flagship device from Samsung. Whenever I bought a new device, Samsung has been one of the contenders, but ultimately some things never quite appealed to me, so I ended up either getting HTC or Nokia.

Samsung sure raised some eyebrows when they announced the SGS II, sporting some impressive features like a Dual Core ARMv7 1,2GHz processor, a super AMOLED plus display, Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread and lots and lots more. Yes I was impressed too, and with the HTC Sensation being a good device, but not completely what i wanted, I thought it was time to have a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S II. There is a lot of demand for trial devices at Vodafone Austria (one could say now it is cause Samsung sent out a ridiculously low amount of devices), so my test period has shortened to just a week, so don’t expect an in-depth review, but rather some day-to-day impressions from the week i have spent with it. Will i miss it? Will I even BUY my first ever Samsung device? Read on..

Thoughts from Hell: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Review Part 1 – What’s hot?

It’s been some time since i last had a Sony Ericsson smartphone in my hand. After the desaster named Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, i was almost frightened to go back to SE again. Sony sure had it’s qualities, but they kinda missed it with the X10. big time. Fast forward into 2011, Sony Ericsson seemed to have learned from their mistakes and CES was a first sign of things to come, with the introduction of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. Slim, sexy and Gingerbread under the hood. A recipe, i thought, could breath new life into SE’s Smartphone division.

Impressed with SE’s latest try, I was eager to get my hands on the Arc. It attracted me in many ways. Even more so, when i had my hands on one shortly at the Sony Ericsson on Ice event some time ago! The time has come, when the fine folks of Sony Ericsson’s PR agency (thanks Marlene!) thankfully sent a review unit over.

So did it live up to it’s hype? Read on, once again divided into hits and misses (which will follow up later on):

Picture Gallery: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, sexyness included!

It was just last week, when i received a device I was looking forward to a lot: The brand new Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. Set to steer Sony Ericsson out of the swamp they were drowning in, this piece of hotness comes with a 4,2″ LCD screen with a new Bravia Engine technology, an 8MP camera with Exmor R sensor and dual LED flash, 720p video recording at 30fps and continuous autofocus. On top of that all sits Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread, customized by Sony Ericsson. This all comes packed in a 8.9mm thin plastic body. And oh my god, this is really thin. Is it worth the hype? Read that in my upcoming Thoughts from Hell, where i take a closer look at what is hot, and what not with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. In the meantime, feast your eyes on yet another of my picture galleries.

Unknown futuristic Nokia Phone featured in Real Steel Trailer?

Well well, look what I’ve just found! While watching the latest Trailer for “Real Steel“, a geeky Sci-Fi Robot fight movie, there’s Hugh Jackman tapping on his phone to end a call, which turns out to be an unknown(?), futuristic looking Nokia phone. It sure does look a bit like a N8/E7, with the plastic caps on top and bottom, with a transparent middle part. Of course phones will always be transformed a bit to fit into movie styles, but hey, it’s all fun, so why not show it to you?

Check at 00:16 into this Trailer!

Review: Jabra Cruiser 2

I have always been a fan of Jabra Products, ever since i tried one of their headsets a few years ago. Just recently i got in touch with them about testing some of their products, and i was pleasantly surprised that the people at Jabra and Namu-PR are a very nice bunch. I laid my eyes on the Jabra Cruiser 2, a hands-free solution for every mobile phone that supports Bluetooth. A big thank you to Namu-PR for that!

Nokia Deep Dive: Nokia E6 hands on pictures!

I have been invited to a nice little event here from Nokia Austria, dubbed “Nokia Deep Dive”. The whole event was made to show a handful of bloggers and developers here in Austria, the newly introduced Symbian Anna and the 2 new devices that will come with it out of the box, the Nokia E6 and X7.

Starting off with the Nokia E6, i can not tell you how much i like this device. Being a long time E71/E72 fan, i always had a weak spot and was always hoping for a worthy replacement. And while some of you might disagree because of the camera, I’m fine with what i get. I’m not a fan of Nokia’s recent idea of full focus cameras either, but usability still is No.1 for me. My hopes were high for a successor, that gets rid of the dusty old Symbian S60 3rd edition, and Nokia delivered. They even went on and replaced the old QVGA screens with a shiny new capacitive, multitouch touchscreen with a brand new VGA resolution. This results in a 326ppi, in other words, the screen is extremely sharp.

More on the Device and Symbian Anna in an upcoming post, meanwhile enjoy the pictures I took at the event, showing you all the sweet spots of the Nokia E6! As usual, all those pictures can be found in full resolution over at flickr, in my Nokia E6 picture set!

Say Hello to the Nokia E6!

Meet the Fone Arena Team – Jon Choo!

Welcome to our interview series here on Fone Arena, something we wanted to do for quite some time now. We invite you to (virtually) meet the team working behind the scenes, we invite you to meet the Fone Arena Team! Each week I will conduct a new interview with one of our authors, in which you’ll get to know us a bit better.

This week I’d like you to meet Jon Choo from the UK. I’ve had the pleasure to meet Jon at the Ovi “good things” trip, and then again at Nokia World last year in London. A true tech enthusiast and very nice guy, enjoy his interview!

Who are you? Introduce yourself!

Hi, I am Jon Choo. I grew up in Malaysia but spent all my adult life in Britain. I currently live near London. I enjoy fell walking, watching films, video gaming, camping, photography, attending live music, socialising and doing cool stuff like flash mobs. I am also a twitter addict – you can find me on @jonchoo

Tell us a little bit about your “mobile career”. What did you do prior to Fone Arena?

Prior to joining Fone Arena, I ran my own blog (jonchoo.blogspot.com). In fact I still do. I started blogging about technology and video games in general since 2003 – Palm OS and Pocket PC were my main interests back then. I’ve also contributed to www.palminfocenter.com in the past. Before that I hung around various IRC channels and forums relating to Palm OS.

I have always been fascinated by mobile technology all the way from my first phone, a Motorola StarTac 75; first PDA, a Palm Vx; and finally to my first smartphone, the HTC Magician.

Which Device(s) do you currently use?

As far as phones goes I currently use a Nokia N8 and a Motorola Milestone 2, which I recently reviewed here on Fona Arena. I currently use a ThinkPad X61 (looking into getting a ThinkPad X220 in the future) as my main and only computer, and shoot with a Nikon D90 and Canon S90. In addition to those I also have a PS3, PSP, Wii and DS Lite. Finally I also have a Three MiFi (Huawei E585) mobile wireless router.

Your favourite OS at the moment?

I have none. I still use Symbian out of habit, and because I’ve made several investments in applications. I would move to Android but have never warmed to the UI. I have high hopes for Windows Phone 7 – the UX is there, Microsoft just need to get those missing features for power users. Hopefully this is an area Nokia can help.

What was the coolest thing that ever happened to you, involving mobile phones?

Getting to attend events and meeting influential people. Some of these people are no longer ‘contacts’ as I consider them as friends. But if I have to name one, it was Conspiracy for Good (http://www.conspiracyforgood.com), held in London during the summer of 2010. The augmented reality gaming (ARG) event combined two of my favourite subjects – mobile technology and gaming – into a form of offline and online interactive story telling. Getting to hang out with Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes, was also pretty memorable.

I also enjoyed the entire week of Nokia World 2010. The entire week was mental, from the pre Nokia World meetup in London, the VIP party, watching Tim Berners-Lee’s rousing speech on stage, shaking Stephen Elop’s hand to witnessing HTC ‘gate-crashing’ Nokia World (and vice versa).

Where do you see mobile phones in the future?

In the future there would be no mobile phones. Everything will be connected rendering the concept of a traditional mobile phone/smartphone irrelevant.

As for the immediate future, manufacturers will increasingly try to out-spec each other with features like projectors and 3D displays we do not need. We are already seeing that happen. There is a reason why I am not rushing to reach my wallet for any of the new phones announced recently at MWC.

And last but not least, how would your dream device look like?

This is a tough question, if only because my dream device would be based on current technology limitation. In terms of design I would like to see Nokia work on their Nokia Aeon concept.

At this point in life, I just want something that delivers a great user experience, be always connected so I can be in touch with people who matters to me and yet maintain a great battery life. There is far too much emphasis on raw specs and features we do not need and solutions to problems we do not have. But who knows what the future will bring? A fully functional Tricorder perhaps? 😀

Nokia N8 Cam Shots: The spring is coming!

It’s been a rather rainy day today here in Austria, but since the weather has cleared up a bit, i was out and about with the Nokia N8 before. Spring has finally arrived and with it some buds on the tree right in front of the company I’m working at. If you know me, you know my love for the Nokia N8. Symbian^3 doesn’t exactly make it the most user-friendly device, but as mentioned in my Nokia E7 hits and misses post, Nokia’s hardware is unmatched. Focus point on the Nokia N8 is of course the 12MP camera with carl zeiss optics, a xenon flash and the biggest sensor ever put into a mobile phone. The results were so awesome, I’ve decided to do this quick post here at Fone Arena!

Picture Gallery: Nokia C6-01

And here I am with yet another fine picture gallery for you all, this time i had the Nokia C6-01 right in front of my lens! Nokia’s smallest Symbian^3 smartphone certainly has the looks and feel to impress, which comes into play even more when the georgeous 3,2″ Clear Black display is powered on. Perfect for everyone who wants a smaller smartphone, without having to worry about a 4″ screen fitting into the pocket or not. I won’t go into much detail, as I have my review up soon! In the meantime, feast your eyes on the pictures of the Nokia C6-01!

The Nokia C6-01 in all its georgeousness!
