Google today announced a series of strategic partnerships and product updates aimed at democratizing responsible AI learning across India. The announcement covers a broad spectrum of the education sector, ranging from state-level institutional collaborations and philanthropic grants to consumer-facing tools for competitive exam preparation.
Institutional Partnerships and Infrastructure
A central component of the announcement is a collaboration between Google, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), Meerut. This partnership aims to launch India’s first “AI-enabled” state university.
According to Google, this initiative serves as a pilot to create a national framework for modernizing higher education and vocational training. The collaboration intends to bridge the digital divide by providing regional institutions with tools and mentorship typically found in metropolitan centers.
Key aspects of the CCSU project include:
- Infrastructure: The university will utilize the Gemini Enterprise platform to automate administrative workflows and support staff efficiency. Placecom has been appointed as the implementation partner to oversee technical deployment.
- Pedagogy: The program will introduce personalized AI tutors and AI-led skill gap analysis for students. Faculty will be supported in using AI to design multilingual teaching aids and interactive simulations.
- Scalability: Insights from this pilot will help the MSDE develop a “National Best Practice Framework” to assist India’s 50,000 colleges and 1,200 universities in adopting AI technologies.
Philanthropic Grants for Scale
Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org, announced an ₹85 crore (approximately $10 million) grant to Wadhwani AI. This funding is directed toward modernizing government-owned education platforms, such as SWAYAM and the POSHAN Tracker.
The project targets reaching 75 million students by December 2027. It focuses on deploying voice-AI technologies to help young students build oral reading fluency in ten Indian languages and providing AI-powered English language coaches to improve employability.
New Tools for Students
Google introduced specific features within its Gemini platform and Search tailored to the needs of Indian students, particularly those preparing for competitive examinations.

JEE Main Practice Tests Google has launched full-length JEE Main practice tests within Gemini. To address concerns regarding accuracy in AI-generated educational content, these tests are grounded in vetted content provided by education platforms PhysicsWallah and Careers360. Students can access these by prompting Gemini with commands such as “I want to take a JEE Main mock test,” which provides immediate feedback on strengths and weaknesses.

AI Mode in Search New updates to AI Mode in Search include capabilities to build study guides and interactive quizzes. A “Canvas” tool has been added to help students refine documents and plans in a dynamic side panel.
Updates for Educators and Safety Measures
For educators, Google announced enhancements to Google Classroom designed to personalize learning and automate workflows. New features include native audio and video feedback tools, AI-usage insights, and the integration of the Google Classroom app directly into Gemini.
To address concerns regarding the authenticity of digital content, Google is deploying SynthID. This technology applies a digital watermark to identify AI-generated or edited content, allowing users to verify the authenticity of images and videos uploaded to the Gemini app.
Research and Usage Trends
Google shared data suggesting that India currently leads the world in daily Gemini usage for learning purposes. Additionally, Indian users have generated over 3 million outputs—such as quizzes and audio overviews—using NotebookLM in the past month.
The company also cited early outcomes from a randomized control study conducted by Google DeepMind with the City Montessori School in Lucknow and Fab AI. The study reportedly found that in the majority of AI-student interactions, students utilized “Guided Learning” features in Gemini to develop conceptual understanding rather than seeking immediate answers.
Google has stated that these tools, including Gemini, NotebookLM, and AI Mode in Search, are being made available in multiple Indian languages to ensure broader accessibility.
Regarding this, Preeti Lobana, VP and Country Manager, Google India, said:
We are energized by the opportunity to scale this impact. By combining the human connection of teaching with research-backed AI principles in learning, we are helping build a future where every learner in India, regardless of their language or location, has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Chris Phillips, VP, Education, Google, said:
India is home to power users that are embracing multimodal, multilingual, and deep learning, and we are seeing that usage right here with products like Gemini.
We are excited by the opportunity to improve learning outcomes by scaling
personalized, active learning through deep collaboration with the education ecosystem, ensuring AI acts as a responsible, teacher-centric equalizer. By grounding our tools in the science of learning, we aim to foster critical thinking and elevate the fundamental connection between teachers and learners.
Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C), MSDE and MoE, said:
To realize the vision of a Viksit Bharat, we must empower our entire educational ecosystem with digital tools and AI – from the students in the classroom to the educators leading them. This collaboration with Google Cloud and Chaudhary Charan Singh University is a step toward bridging the digital divide. By establishing this AI-Enabled University pilot, we are aiming to create a framework that will allow thousands of institutions to independently elevate their standards. When we equip our teachers with world-class AI tools and our colleges with smarter operational frameworks, we help in preparing students, regardless of geography, to be ready to lead in the AI era. Ultimately, we are working to modernize education so that a student’s success is defined by their talent and drive, ensuring they graduate not just with a degree, but with the high-demand skills to thrive in the workforce.
