Corning Incorporated just announced the Gorilla Glass 4, the company’s fourth generation Gorilla Glass and the successor of the most popular Gorilla Glass 3 present on 3 billion devices. The Gorilla Glass 4 is thin and light as previous versions, but has been formulated to deliver drastically improved damage resistance allowing improved in-field performance and is two times tougher than any competitive cover glass design now in the market, says the company. Qualcomm has announced its new Gobi 9×45 fifth-generation Category 10 LTE cellular multimode modem that supports global Carrier Aggregation (CA) for download speeds of up to 450 Mbps, upload speeds of up to 100Mbps, and CA across the TDD and FDD spectrum, compared to 300Mbps download speeds in the 9×25, 9×30 and 9×35 Gobi modems. It is based on the second-generation 20nm technology node and supports up to 60 MHz 3x CA in the downlink and up to 40 MHz 2x CA in the uplink. Huawei and Russian operator MegaFon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of 5G technology with a view to a potential launch in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The MoU builds on a partnership between the two companies that stretches back to the deployment of GSM in 2002. The MoU is likely to mean 5G services could become available to participants and guests at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and as part of the MoU, the two companies will work together to plan, build and deploy 5G network infrastructure. Steve Unger has been appointed as the new interim Chief Executive Officer set regulator Ofcom until the position is filled permanently in early 2015. Unger will replace Ed Richards, the current CEO, who has announced he is leaving his position at the end of the year. Unger, who holds a Master’s degree in Physics and a PhD in AstroPhysics, has previously held Director roles at Manet Telecom and the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes. Uber has launched UberGO, a low-cost Uber service cheaper than the UberX in India. Uber entered India last year with its UberBLACK service and launched its UberX service back in June. The base fare for UberGO is just Rs.20 or Rs. 40 depending on the city. Rate per minute and kilometer are also cheaper in UberGO compared to UberX. It is now available in all the 10 cities where Uber is operational, across India that includes, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. O2 has followed in the footsteps of its rival networks and today has launched data sharer plans for individuals and families in the UK. The new plans, which start at £6 per month, offer up to 8GB data which can be shared across multiple devices or between family members. The Sharer Plan and Family Sharer Plan uses a customer’s data bundle and allows them to share it either across multiple devices and smart technology or between devices owned by different members of the family. Royal Mail on Wednesday warned that online giant Amazon’s own delivery service and increased competition from rival couriers has hampered progress and impacted revenues. The former state-owned British company said that Amazon’s plans to launch their own delivery service would cut the growth in the British parcel market for it and its rivals from 4-5 percent down to 1-2 percent.
