JDI starts mass production of 5-inch class Quad HD In-cell touch LTPS display

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) has announced that it has begun mass production start of 5-inch class (Starting from 5-inch) low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) LCD module with WQHD (1440×2560 pixels) resolution and over 500 PPI pixel density. JDI said that it has reduced LCD panel power consumption in the WQHD screen by using improved materials to reduce LCD driving frequency from 60Hz to 30Hz depending on the display image signal without affecting the image quality, thus achieving low power. Vivo is all set to launch V5 Plus in India on January 23rd. The smartphone went official earlier this week. Now the selfie-focused phone is available for pre-order through retail stores in India, according to Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom. The main highlight of the phone is its 20-megapixel front-facing camera with Sony IMX376 1/2.78″ sensor, f/2.0 aperture and an 8-megapixel secondary font-facing camera for capturing depth information. Lenovo has started rolling out ZUI 2.5 update based on Android 7.0 (Nougat) for the ZUK Z2 and Z2 Pro smartphones in China, as it had promised last month. Lenovo introduced PHAB 2 Pro, the world’s first Google tango-enabled smartphone for consumers at the Tech World 2016 in San Francisco back in June last year. It was launched in the U.S. at the end of last year, today Lenovo has finally launched the smartphone in India. The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro has four cameras that includes a 16-megapixel RGB camera, a depth camera, a motion tracking camera and a 8-megapixel front-facing camera for Tango’s 3D mapping technology to understand the world around you.

Ulefone has announced Gemini, its latest mid-range smartphone and its first phone with dual rear cameras. It has a 13-megapixel rear camera along with a 5-megapixel camera to capture depth information offering Bokeh effect for blurred background or foreground. It also has a fingerprint sensor on the front to unlock the phone in 0.15 seconds. It has a full metal unibody design and packs a 5.5-inch 1080p screen from Sharp. Nokia 6 sold out in under a minute in first sale in China

HMD Global introduced the Nokia 6 smartphone exclusively for China earlier this month. Last week jd.com has started taking pre-orders for the smartphone for today’s sale. In the first flash sale the smartphone sold out in under a minute, according to reports from China. Earlier this week registrations crossed a million, so it is not surprising.

Sony Mobile schedules MWC 2017 event on February 27

Sony Mobile has sent out invites for its Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 event in Barcelona, which is scheduled for February 27th, the first day of the MWC. The invite just says that “You’re invited to see the latest innovations unveiled at the Sony Press Conference”. The company is not expected to introduce any flagship smartphones, but we can expect some new mid-range Xperia smartphones and some accessories. Xiaomi has finally launched its Redmi Note 4 smartphone in India, as it had promised. It packs a 5.5-inch 1080p screen, similar to the Redmi Note 3, but this is powered by a an Octa-Core Snapdragon 625 SoC, instead of Hexa-Core Snapdragon 650 processor on the Redmi Note 3. It runs on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) with MIUI 8 top, has a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash and phase-detection auto-focus (PDAF) and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Netflix reports $2.35B in revenue, adds 7 million new subscribers in Q4 2016

Netflix has recorded $2.48 billion revenue in Q4 2016, up 41% YoY. The US based streaming service added 7.05 million subscribers of which 1.93 million members were from the U.S. and 5.12 million internationally. Google acquires Twitter’s mobile developer platform Fabric

Google has acquired Fabric mobile developer platform from Twitter. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. As a result of the acquisition, Fabric our team will join Google’s Developer Products Group, working with the Firebase team.
