In Q2 2020, the Indian smartphone market shipped 18.2 million units, recording a decline of 50.6% YoY, according to a report by IDC. The decline was primarily caused by the COVID-19 and the top 5 smartphone sellers for the quarter were Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, realme and OPPO.
The premium smartphone segment (above Rs. 30000) recorded an overall decline of about 32% YoY in Q2 2020, as the market continued to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. OnePlus took the first place in market share for this quarter, close followed by Samsung second place and Apple in third place.
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the smartphone market as IDC has reported that the worldwide smartphone market declined by 16% YoY in Q2 2020. Total shipments were recorded at 278.4 million smartphones and the top 5 manufacturers for the quarter were HUAWEI, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO.
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect smartphone sales as a new report from Counterpoint Research states that the premium smartphone segment recorded a decline of 13% YoY globally. In the lead is Apple, contributing 4 out of the top 5 premium smartphones sold globally, followed by Samsung and then Huawei.

The premium smartphone market (>Rs. 30000) has been a competition between Samsung Apple and OnePlus for many quarters now. In the first quarter of 2020, the market saw a growth of 21% YoY, with Samsung managing to edge out Apple to take the lead as India’s current top premium smartphone manufacturer.
Being the only one among the top 3 to record a positive growth for the first quarter of 2020, the Indian smartphone market shipped 32.4 million units overall. This calculates to a growth of 1.5% YoY, whereas the Chinese and US markets saw a decline of 20.3% YoY and 16.0% YoY respectively. The top 5 manufacturers continue to be Xiaomi, Vivo, Samsung, realme and OPPO.

The Q3 2019 reports released by IDC revealed a decline of 3.6% YoY in smartphone shipments in China during Q3 2019. Now, IDC has released the shipments report for Q1 2020 and it reveals the largest decline ever in China smartphone market.
Worldwide smartphone shipments decreased 11.7% year over year in Q2 2020, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. In total, companies shipped a 275.8 million smartphones during quarter making this is the largest annual (year over year) decline ever and the first time smartphone market has fallen below 300 million units in a quarter since Q2 2014. This is mainly due to COVID-19 pandemic and the peak of the lockdowns in China, which extended to the rest of the world by the end of the quarter.
