Nokia Lumia 1020 Unboxing, AT&T Unlocked Version

The Nokia Lumia 1020 just arrived at FoneArena today and guess what, we managed to get hold of a unlocked unit from a US retailer. The device is currently exclusive sold only on AT&T in USA and Nokia is yet to launch the SIM-free/unlocked version in USA or any other market but how can you get one ? Read on to find out. This is indeed the Lumia 1020 for AT&T with the carrier branding but the good thing is it can accept any GSM SIM card, be it T-Mobile, Airtel or Vodafone. This supports LTE on AT&T but would work over 3G, HSPA in many countries including India. The device has evolved from the 808 PureView which was running on Symbian and subsequently the Lumia 920 which was one of the first Windows phones with a PureView camera. Today we have a combination of the best of the imaging from the 808 and 920, improved leaps and bounds, and delivered in the form of the Lumia 1020. iBall Andi 4a Radium, a new budget smartphone in the Andi series is now available from online retailer Snapdeal. It has a 4-inch (480 x 854 pixels) TFT capacitive touch screen IPS display and is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It has a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a front-facing camera. It comes with dual SIM support with dual standby similar to other iBall smartphones. SwiftKey Cloud Beta updated with bug fixes and improvements

SwiftKey released v4.2 Cloud Beta few weeks back with backup and sync and trending phrases feature. Now the company has released an update to the app that brings lot of improvements and bug fixes. These fixes includes better responsiveness for flow predictions, crash fixes in cloud preference and Gmail personalization and lots more. Even though there are lot of fixes, it also has some known issues, which would eventually be fixed in the final release. Nokia Lumia 1020 Yellow & Black headed to O2 UK in September, 64GB variant might be coming too

O2 UK have updated their coming soon page to show they’ll be stocking the Nokia Lumia 1020 in Yellow from next month. The Lumia 1020 will also be available in Black from O2 and will run on their 4G network, which launches on August 29.Another piece of related news is that O2 UK might be carrying a 64GB version of the Lumia 1020 too in addition to the usual 32GB which is currently on sale in the US.

ZTE Open Firefox OS device to be sold on eBay for $80

ZTE Open, the first commercial Firefox OS device went on sale in Spain last month. Now ZTE has officially announced that it would go on sale in the US and UK soon through eBay. The Firefox developer devices Keon and Peak manufactured by Spanish company GeeksPhone went on sale in April. The ZTE Open was unveiled at the MWC earlier this year. It has a 3.5-inch (480×320 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1GHz MSM7225A Snapdragon S1 processor and runs on Firefox OS. Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 vs Galaxy Note 2

Samsung opened the doors of the phablet industry with their original Galaxy Note and now are expanding their lineup of devices with even bigger phablets – Galaxy Mega series.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 was launched at the end of May while the Galaxy Note 2 was launched earlier last year in September. Both the devices are completely different except the fact that they are phablets and have 5.5inch + displays. The Galaxy Note 2 is almost at the end of the product cycle with Note 3 announcement around the corner.

HTC One Max press image leaks online

HTC has been having a tough time keeping its big “One Max” under the wraps. The HTC One Max is expected to be HTC’s entry into the phablet market and will directly take on Samsung Galaxy Note series which is also due a refresh in the coming month. So far, we have had some photos about the alleged HTC One Max going about the internet and HTC have officially teased the launch of HTC One Max with a teaser video, now we have a supposed press image courtesy of popular leakster @evleaks.

Is Motorola making the next Google Nexus?

Rumours of a Motorola made Nexus device were ripe once Google acquired the mobile giant, but plans never solidified, citing reasons like “Google not impressed with Moto’s devices” etc. With LG taking charge of the program last year with the Nexus 4, Motorola was left to work on the Moto X, a Google inspired smartphone that is possibly the first device to come out of this acquisition. But this was no Nexus, it didn’t run the latest operating system nor updates will be pushed by Google, so yet again we were deprived of a Moto Nexus, but if recent rumours are to be believed, especially coming from a prolific tipster from Texas(where Motorola assembles its Moto X), the chances of Motorola making the next Nexus 5 device are rather high.

Micromax Canvas 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos

Samsung and Micromax have had a lot of success in the Indian smartphone market. Today we have Micromax’s latest flagship device – Canvas 4 and Samsung’s very famous smartphone in India – Galaxy Grand (GT-I9082). The Canvas 4 was launched in early July while Galaxy Grand was released way back in January earlier this year. Despite having a familiar 5inch display and similar price points, both the devices are different in their own terms. Lets check out how they differ and which is better.

Nokia Asha 501 – Made in India, by India, for India

Sriperumbudur, a quiet town outside of Chennai, is now increasingly known for its sprawling automobile factories, electronic SEZs(Special Economic Zones), and of course, hot job opportunities. Several automobile and mobile phone giants are part of this story. It all started 10 years back, when automobile companies like Hyundai saw the proximity to a harbour huge enough to handle exports and set up bases here, quickly gaining this city the name “Detroit of India”.

In the same “Detroit of India” lies one of Nokia’s biggest production facilities. The opportunistic Nokia of the past saw the booming mobile market in India in the 2000s, and started setting up their assembling facility here, right in the heart of Sriperumbudur’s SEZ. The logistics for exports had already become robust, thanks to the omnipresent automobile industry in that area, so the opportunity was ripe.

On a surprisingly overcast day, I was on my second visit to Nokia’s Chennai facility with several other bloggers. Having already witnessed the marvel of a huge production facility the first time, I couldn’t wait to see what new tricks Nokia had up their sleeves. Spoiler: It’s the Nokia Asha 501.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Vs Galaxy Grand

Samsung is known for flooding the entire market with a plethora of phones and the Galaxy series is good example. You have a phone for almost any price range right from entry level to the flagship level. Samsung’s consistency has been one of its main reasons for success and it recently launched two “huge” phones – Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3.

Today we the have smaller of the Mega brothers and one of the Samsung’s most successful Galaxy phones in India this year – Galaxy Grand. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 was launched at the end of May while the Galaxy Grand was launched earlier this year in January. Google has updated the Play Store app to version 4.3.10 that brings new features including recently updated section, combined updated notifications and lots more. This update also includes some UI tweaks to Play Books, Movies & TV and more. These are just minor changes, but the recently updated section would be more useful if you have lot of apps. LG Optimus L1 II with 3-inch display, 1 GHz processor and Android 4.1 announced

LG has announced the Optimus L1 II, a new phone in the L Series II. It has a 3.0-inch (320 x 240 pixels) capacitive touch screen display, powered by a 1 GHz processor and runs on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean). It has a 2-megapixel rear camera with VGA video recording. Apart from the screen size and the camera, other features are similar to the LG Optimus L3 II that was launched in India back in April.
