Qualcomm just announced Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 630 high-end Mobile Platforms, successors of last year’s Snapdragon 653 and Snapdragon 626. The Snapdragon 660 is the first processor in the lineup to come with Kryo CPU that promises 20% better performance compared to Snapdragon 653. It also has new Adreno 512 GPU that offers 30% better performance compared to Adreno 510 and the new Adreno 508 GPU on the Snapdragon 630 offers 30% better performance compared to 506. The Snapdragon 630 uses the same Cortex A53 CPUs, but its arranged in performance and efficiency cluster arrangement. Apple stops paying iPhone royalties to Qualcomm

Apple is withholding payments to contract manufacturers that are owed to Qualcomm until the legal dispute between the two companies is resolved. As a result, Qualcomm has slashed its current-quarter profit and revenue forecasts. The company has lowered its revenue guidance to a range of $4.8 billion to $5.6 billion for the fiscal third quarter from $5.3 billion to $6.1 billion.

Qualcomm Signs 3G/4G Patent License Agreement with Smartron, has over 330 licensees globally

Qualcomm today announced that it has entered into a 3G and 4G patent license agreement with Indian OEM Smartron. Under the deal, Qualcomm has granted Smartron a royalty-bearing patent license to develop, manufacture and sell WCDMA, CDMA2000, and 4G LTE complete devices. Last year Qualcomm singed 3G and 4G patent license agreement with several Chinese companies such as Lenovo, OPPO, Gionee, Vivo and more. Qualcomm at an event in Delhi announced its new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform to bring 4G LTE connectivity and 4G services to entry-level feature phones. It includes the Qualcomm 205 SoC, which encompasses the baseband functionalities, plus hardware components including RF front end, discrete Wi-Fi, power management, audio codec, speaker amplifier, and software for a comprehensive mobile solution. Qualcomm also showed off a VoLTE feature phone with a keyboard developed by FIH/Megafone, similar to the Lava 4G Connect M1. Qualcomm today announced that it is refining its terminology by referring to Snapdragon as a “platform” instead of a processor. “Snapdragon is more than a single component, a piece of silicon, or what many would misinterpret as the CPU; it’s an anthology of technology, comprising hardware, software, and services that are not fully captured in a word like
“processor,”, said the company regarding the re-branding.
