Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s new augmented reality platform called Camera Effects Platform on first day of the F8 2017 conference. Launched in open beta, the platform turns smartphone cameras into the first AR platform, providing an opportunity for artists and developers to create effects for the Facebook camera.

Nokia and Facebook complete multiple submarine field trials

Nokia and Facebook announced the successful completion of a series of field trials of new optical digital signal processing technologies over a 5,500-kilometre transatlantic subsea link between New York and Ireland. To increase the capacity capabilities of submarine fibre to cope with bandwidth-hungry applications, the companies tested Nokia Bell Labs’ new probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) technology. Facebook rolls out Community Help feature to help neighbors after a disaster

Facebook has rolled out a new Community Help feature to Safety Check which allows users to users to either offer or locate assistance such as food, shelter or transportation during times of crisis. The social network had launched the Safety Check feature in 2014 that enables users to mark them safe thereby letting their friends and family know they were safe during natural disasters.
