Google Maps for iOS updated with improved search, Gmail invitations and more

Google has updated Google Maps for iPhone and iPad with several features. The version 3.2 now has improved search results as they now come with descriptions. Google Maps for Android and iOS got updated with support to save maps for offline viewing, Uber integration and more back in May. Earlier this year these apps got faster route notification.

Nokia acquires Medio Systems to boost HERE

Nokia has scooped yet another start-up to enhance its offerings for HERE Maps. The company has acquired Medio Systems, a real-time predictive analytics firm for an undisclosed sum. It will use Medio’s technology to give users of its location-based services more personalised results and maps.

Apple reportedly acquires social recommendation search app SpotSetter

In a bid to boost its mapping service, Apple has scooped up social search engine app SpotSetter, according to Techcrunch. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by the company. Founded in 2011, SpotSetter provides personalized recommendations for places to go such as restaurants, stores and entertainment venues.

Google Places API brings out Autocomplete for better predictions

ANS Navigator App now available on Google Play Store

ANS and NNG, providers of GPS Navigation Hardware have launched the new ANS Navigator application for Android phones. The turn by turn navigation application that was previously available only for iOS devices is now on the Play Store and comes with mapping data for India that is as recent as Q2 2013. Apple acquires WiFiSLAM indoor-GPS mapping company for $20 million

In a bid to strength its mapping application and positioning technology portfolio, Apple has acquired WiFiSLAM. The Silicon Valley startup has been working on improving on and facilitating indoor navigation using Wi-Fi triangulation as opposed to the GPS based system in place as of now.

Hands on with Nokia’s HERE Maps for iOS

Google Maps web app for iOS to get Street View support

Walt Mossberg reported on the Wall Street Journal that Google will soon rolling out Street View to users of the iOS Google Maps web app. With iOS 6, Apple replaced the integrated Google Maps based solution with their homegrown offering which pales in comparison.

Nokia inks licensing deal with Oracle for mapping services

The Wall Street Journal reports that Nokia has inked a deal with Oracle to license its mapping data. What it means is that Oracle will be using Nokia’s mapping data in its applications. This is definitely a win for the Finnish company which has so far failed to see much traction with its Lumia range of Windows Phone Smartphones.

The latest version of Nokia’s turn by turn navigation solution is now available for Lumia device users everywhere. The upgrade brings several new features to the application including My Commute which learns your driving preferences and then helps you get to your destination quicker by using those along with traffic information to assist with routes.

Google Maps for Android finally gets offline support

At a press event in San Francisco , Google has just announced its intention to bring offline maps to the Android to its mobile map solutions. This offline caching feature will be an extension of the 10mile cache which is already possible. This announcement comes hot on the heels of rumors that Apple might be ditching Google and going with their own in-house maps application.
