Google Maps for Android finally gets offline support

At a press event in San Francisco , Google has just announced its intention to bring offline maps to the Android to its mobile map solutions. This offline caching feature will be an extension of the 10mile cache which is already possible. This announcement comes hot on the heels of rumors that Apple might be ditching Google and going with their own in-house maps application.

Fueling the rumor is Apple’s acquisition of C3 , a company which has pioneered 3D maps technology. In addition to the announcement of offline caching , Google also revealed that its Street-View cars have now driven 5 million miles and collected over 20 petabytes worth of image data. Also , Google will be bringing its Map Maker to 10 additional countries including South Africa and Egypt.
