KitKat 4.4 runs on over 20% of Android devices, Jelly Bean continues to shrink

Google has revealed Android distribution numbers for the month of August that covers a period of time of 7 days, ending on August 12. The data shows the most recent version of Android KitKat reach an all-time usage high at 20.9 percent, up from 17.9 percent this time last month thereby recording a 3 percent growth.

Google posts new images of Android L Preview and releases Google Fit SDK preview

Google has released updated images of the Android L developer preview. The new images weigh in as build LPV81C and are still only available to the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi. This is an upgrade from the LPV79 build that was released in late June.

YouTube for Android updated with minor Playlist enhancements

YouTube is bringing some new tweaks to playlist management in the latest update. The version 5.9.0.10 now gets a contextual menu that provides quicker access to pre-existing features. An action overflow button will appear next to each result at the time of  searching for a playlist.

Google Search gets deep app linking, hands free mode, Play Music also updated

Google has updated Google Search with a bunch of new features. The version 3.6 adds the  ability for developers to deep link app information through Android’s linking API. However, these features require developers to implement them first within their apps. Additionally, the Search app hints at Google working on a hands-free mode. It would introduce a new interface for when you are driving to offer you a simple and less cluttered interface.

Google buys mobile video editing start-up Directr

Google’s YouTube has acquired a mobile-video app maker Directr for an undisclosed sum. The app is used by small businesses to create marketing promotional videos. Directr team will integrate into YouTube’s video ads division as a result of the acquisition.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition officially taken down from Play Store

Google is continuing to remove old Google Play Edition devices from the Play Store. Last month, it took down devices like Sony Xperia Z Ultra, LG G Pad 8.3 and HTC One (M7) from the Play Store. Today, Google has announced that it has dropped Samsung Galaxy S4 from the list as well.

Google Now Launcher now available for all devices running Android 4.1 or higher

Google Now Launcher arrived along with the Google Nexus 5 running Android 4.4 (KitKat) so that you can directly access Google Now from the home screen. Back in February Google released the Google Now Launcher on Google Play for its Nexus and Google Play Edition devices running Android 4.4 (KitKat).
