Microsoft kills Unlimited OneDrive storage, downgrades free storage from 15GB to 5GB for all

Last October Microsoft upgraded OneDrive storage to unlimited for all Office 365 subscribers from 1TB of free storage introduced last June that was increased from 20GB. Now the company has announced that it will no longer be offering unlimited storage to Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscribers. All these will roll back to 1 TB. Microsoft says that some Office 365 subscribers had backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings that exceeded 75 TB per user, which is the main reason for killing unlimited storage. Microsoft now offers 15GB free storage for OneDrive, 1TB for Office 365 users

Owing to increasing competition in the cloud storage market, Microsoft has more than doubled its free cloud storage and Office 365 subscription. The company is offering 15 GB of free storage to subscribers, matching the amount of free storage Google Drive offers. Earlier, Microsoft offered only 7GB of free storage.

Microsoft’s SkyDrive is now OneDrive

Microsoft was involved in a Trademark fight over the name “SkyDrive” and it lost. So, they had to rebrand it and from now on, Microsoft’s SkyDrive will be called as “Microsoft OneDrive”. Microsoft’s OneDrive is one among the many cloud storage options offered by big companies of the Internet – Google offers Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and many others.

Microsoft’s SkyDrive will be called OneDrive

After a trademark infringement lawsuit, won by the Sky broadcasting corporation in the UK, Microsoft was tasked with changing its consumer facing cloud service “SkyDrive” to something else. Today the company has revealed that SkyDrive will be called “OneDrive”, and that it will start rolling out the changes gradually. Technically, the product remains the same but the name, which is usually a constant, receives a change. This is not the first time Microsoft has been forced to rename its products, as we had witnessed earlier how the company was forced not to use “metro” for its whole design language it developed.
