Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has questioned Reliance Jio to explain why extension of its free voice and data plan should not be seen as violation of existing regulations requiring promotional offers to be limited to 90 days. Reliance Jio has sought additional time till December 29 to respond to TRAI’s query.

The company has added 1,000 customers per minute and 6 lakh per day. Last month the company officially announced that it added record 16 million new subscribers in 26 days of launch. Last month Reliance Jio announced that it had signed record 16 million new subscribers in 26 days of its commercial operations, which must have increased by several folds now. The company already said that it is aiming to reach 100 million subscribers by the year end, before the Jio Welcome offer ends. Even though Jio SIM cards are now widely available in several cities, now it has started a new pilot program to deliver SIM cards to your doorstep, as rumored earlier. Reliance Jio had filed several complaints with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) against incumbent operators who failed to provide sufficient POIs to Jio. Yesterday TRAI in separate letters to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary, has recommended a total penalty of Rs. 3050 core on Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular in circles where the point of interconnect (PoI) congestion exceeded the permissible limit of 0.5%. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently launched MySpeed app to measure and upload internet speeds. It also launched Analytics Portal to show users in detail about network coverage, data speed in their area and Quality of Service (QoS) of their telecom operators. The data on the portal shows that Reliance Jio’s 4G data speed is the slowest among top operators in the country. Idea Cellular on Friday said that it will be providing over 230% additional capacity to Reliance Jio, saying that Quality of Service for its customers is top priority.
