The Mi Mix 2 sits a class apart in Xiaomi’s line up. Sure, there have been flagship grade phones like the Mi5 and Mi6 but the Mix is where we saw a degree of design innovation that was unprecedented. After years of being called out for aping Apple’s design ethos, Xiaomi finally had a device that wasn’t just all of its own but was breaking ground. When the Mi MIX launched, a bezel-less smartphone was essentially a pipe dream. Sure, Sharp had announced a number of them over the years but a product that remained stuck in Japan doesn’t really count, does it? So, when out of the blue, Xiaomi of all brands introduced a modern, uncompromised smartphone that simply broke all design conventions, it quickly became the talk of the town.
In the year that has followed, bezel less and 18:9 are terms that almost every major smartphone manufacturer has latched on to. Now that the gimmick isn’t new or unique, the Mi MIX 2 has to stand up on its own merits. We’ve spent a bit of time with the new hardware. Xiaomi just announced the Mi MIX 2 at an event in China, as it had promised. It has a 5.99-inch 18:9 Full HD+ display with ultra narrow bezels, unlike the 6.4-inch display on the first generation Mi MIX with 17:9 aspect ratio and 12% smaller chin compared to the predecessor. It is powered by an Octa-Core Snapdragon 835 Mobile platform with 6GB of RAM and there is also a Special Edition with 8GB of RAM. It has a 12-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX386 sensor and a 5-megapixel camera on the front on the right bottom that also supports face recognition. After several teasers, Xiaomi just announced that it will unveil Mi MIX 2, its second-generation flagship bezel-less smartphone at an event in China on September 11th. Xiaomi is calling it 2.0 bezel-less display, so it is expected to have minimal bezels. The company already confirmed that it will be designed by French designer Philippe Starck, who designed the Mi MIX.
