5G is the next major phase of mobile telecommunications and follows the global adoption of the 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard since 2012. A new report from China states that the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has started research and testing of the 5G technology.

Huawei and Russian operator MegaFon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of 5G technology with a view to a potential launch in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The MoU builds on a partnership between the two companies that stretches back to the deployment of GSM in 2002. The MoU is likely to mean 5G services could become available to participants and guests at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and as part of the MoU, the two companies will work together to plan, build and deploy 5G network infrastructure. Samsung has announced that it was able to achieve 940MB/second or 7.5Gbps data transmission rate on expreimental 5G network. This was achieved by the company at a stationary environment.

Earlier this month Nokia and NTT DOCOMO had announced a pact to research on 5G technology. Today, National Instruments (NI) has teamed up with Nokia’s Network Business to work on fifth generation (5G) wireless technologies such as exploring peak data rates and cell-edge rates in excess of 10 Gbps and 100 Mbps, respectively.
