Ever since CyanogenMod announced the formation of a new company called Cyanogen Inc, there’s been a lot of drama involved within the team. Guillaume Lesniak, the person behind the rather awesome Focal camera app, has distanced himself from Cyanogen because of the changes in licensing. The very popular BlackBerry messenger (which was exclusive to BlackBerry devices so far) has now gone live on the iOS App Store. To be available around the globe over the next 24 hours, the application is now available on the New Zealand App Store.

As the race to improve smartphone optics flares up, we’ve also seen a variety of interesting offshoots. These range from cameras with built in Android case in point being the Galaxy Camera, Nikon S800C or phones with a more full featured captured module. The Galaxy S4 Zoom and the Nokia 808, 1020 would fall in this category. The problem however is the size and thickness tradeoff being made here.
Sony is trying to change things up a bit by introducing a brand new category of products into the mix. The QX10 and QX100 are Sony’s attempts at letting you have a point and shoot camera that works with your phone and fits in your palm but isn’t permanently attached to the back of your phone. If that sounds weird, you’re right. But we decided keep our reservations about the product aside and give it a proper spin. Earlier today, trading stopped for BlackBerry’s stock and now we know the reason. The company has reported a net loss of $950 million and will be laying off 4500 employees. This comprises of almost 40% of the entire workforce. The company plans to reduce expenses by almost 50% and will retain about 7,000 jobs worldwide.

LG just sent invites for the launch of the new G2 here in India. We’ve previously taken a look at the handset at IFA and found the hardware to be seriously impressive. We’re already working on the review and here is our unboxing of the LG G2. Under the hood is the latest Snapdragon 800 processor paired with 2GB of RAM. There’s also very interesting hardware design going around here with all the physical buttons placed at the rear of the phone below the camera module.
The screen is a 5.2 inch Full HD panel and has an edge to edge screen with almost zero bezel on the sides. The camera is a 13MP unit with optical image stabilization built in. The phone has 16GB of storage paired with a micro SD card slot. You also get WiFi ac support because of the Snapdragon 800 processor being used. The operating system is Android 4.2.2 with LG’s custom interface layer on top of it. We’re not huge fans of this OS layer and have taken a look at it previously on the LG G Pro as well. We’ll have more on the LG G2 closer to launch, in the meanwhile you should check out our hands on video with the phone.

The Sony Xperia Z1 is the latest smartphone flagship from the Japanese manufacturer. The phone packs top of the line specifications in a stunning packaging made of aluminum and glass. We got to spend some time with the phone and here’s our brief impressions.
Apple has just announced the iPhone 5C at an event at its campus. The device will be replacing the iPhone 5 and will be priced lower to reach out to a larger audience. The phone will be available in a range of colors including green, yellow, blue, white and red. Made of hard coated polycarbonate, it uses a new construction method that has a reinforced steel structure.

The specifications include 4 inch retina display with integrated touch and full sRGB spectrum support. Powering it will be an A6 processor. The camera is an 8MP iSight unit with BSI, hybrid IR filter and a 5 element lens. The front camera is now better with a 1.9 micron pixel size, BSI. The iPhone 5C will have support for dual band WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and LTE as well. The phone will be available for $99 for the 16GB version and $199 for the 32GB version on a two year contract. Apple also plans to introduce a range of new cases that looks very snazzy at a price point of $29 each.
Acer unveiled the Liquid S2, successor of the Liquid S1 and the company’s latest flagship smartphone ahead of IFA 2013, earlier this week, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the company’s large screen phablet. Both are large screen phablets. The new Liquid S2 has a 6-inch (1920 x 1080) Full HD IPS display with curved Gorilla Glass 3 protection, while the Z Ultra comes with a 6.4 inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) Triluminos Display with X-Reality engine. Both the phones are powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 GPU.

Sony launched the QX10 smart lens here at IFA in Berlin alongside the QX100 lens. The lenses integrate an AF motor, built in battery that allows them to operate independently from your smartphone.
We’ve got the QX10 here with us and have recorded a quick unboxing video for you. The QX10 is the lower priced version of the two lenses and integrates an f/3.3-5.9 lens with an 18 megapixel 1/2.3 inch sensor. The 10x zoom lens can be operated via the toggle switch on the left of the lens where you can also see the shutter button.

There’s a tripod mount below the lens itself and over on the right you can spot a small lcd that displays the amount of battery left. You can lift the back cover of the lens to place the battery pack and the microSD card. The box contents are fairly minimal and include a lens strap, micro USB cable, the QX10 lens, battery pack and a base to attach to your smartphone. The new Sony smartlenses work with both Android and iOS devices via the PlayMemories app that can be downloaded from the app store. The QX100 operates quite similarly but has a larger 1 inch and 3.6x zoom. The QX10 retails for $250 and we’ll have a full review up very shortly.

The LG G2 is powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor with Adreno 330 GPU, while the Samsung Galaxy S4 is powered by a 1.9 GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 600 / Exynos Octa Processor, here for the comparison we have the Google Play Edition with a Snapdragon 600 processor. Samsung even released the Galaxy S4 LTE-A with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor in select countries. Both these phones run on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). The Sony Xperia Z1 is the latest flagship device announced by the Japanese smartphone manufacturer. We’ve already gone hands on with it and brought to you all the latest details of the phone. Given the camera centric pedigree of the phone, we found it apt to compare with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. Here’s a quick comparison between the two.
The front of the Xperia Z1 has a 5inch Full HD display with the company’s triluminous display built in while the Galaxy S4 Zoom makes do with a 4.3″ Super AMOLED qHD panel. The Z1 has no capacitive buttons and makes do with onscreen controls. The S4 Zoom on the other hand has a hardware home key right below the display with capacitive buttons on either side of it.
