The front of the phone comprises of a large 5 inch Full HD display. This is of the triluminous variety and is a much needed improvement over the panel on the Xperia Z. Very similar to the excellent screen on the Xperia Z Ultra, it has great viewing angles and contrast. The colors appear bright and vivid. Above the display is the 2MP front facing camera.

Powering the Xperia Z1 is a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2 Ghz and it is paired with 2GB of RAM. It also has an Adreno 330 GPU. All this means that the phone is blazing fast. Running on Android 4.2.2 but with an Android 4.3 update expected at launch, the phone has the same custom Sony interface layer that we’ve seen on several other devices. Over at the back of the phone, the glass panel continues and looks absolutely gorgeous. However, it is also one of the most fingerprint prone surfaces we have encountered. The hyper reflective surface is indeed going to be very hard to keep pristine.

One of the most hyped features of the phone is its 20.7MP camera. The camera has a 1/2.3″ sensor which is quite a bit larger than the majority of the competition. This and the f2.2 lens should help it excel in low light shots. There’s a single LED flash next to the camera module.

The phone supports the usual connectivity options including WiFi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and also NFC. There’s a 3000 mAh battery built into it which we feel would be more than sufficient to power the phone for a day or beyond.  We are quite impressed by how Sony has managed to refresh the Z1’s design while keeping it in line with the brand identity. The Sony Xperia Z1 definitely packs a punch both in the performance and power department, all that remains to be seen is if this’ll be enough to fend off competition from the new Galaxy Note 3, iPhone 5s and even the still worthy HTC One. The Sony Xperia Z1 is expected to launch in India on 18th September.
