Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially announced the nationwide rollout of its Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service, coinciding with the New Year. The state-owned telecommunications provider confirmed that the feature, also known as Wi-Fi Calling, is now active for customers across all telecom circles in India.
Improving Connectivity in Low-Signal Zones
The introduction of VoWiFi allows BSNL subscribers to utilize a Wi-Fi network to make and receive voice calls and send messages. This technology is designed to bridge connectivity gaps in areas where cellular signals are typically weak or unstable, such as:
- Basements and building interiors.
- Offices with heavy structural interference.
- Remote locations with limited tower reach.
Technical Implementation
According to the company, the service is built on an IMS-based platform that facilitates seamless handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
Significantly, the feature is integrated directly into the user’s existing mobile number and native phone dialer. This integration eliminates the need for subscribers to download or register with third-party applications to utilize the service.
Strategic Focus on Underserved Areas
BSNL has positioned this rollout as a critical component of its network modernization program. The provider emphasized the benefit for rural and remote regions, noting that users can maintain high-quality voice connectivity even without strong mobile coverage, provided they have access to a stable Wi-Fi connection, such as BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services.
In addition to expanding coverage reach, the move is expected to assist in reducing congestion on the traditional cellular network.
Availability and Activation
BSNL has stated that the VoWiFi service is available at no additional cost to subscribers.
To access the service, users require a compatible smartphone and must manually enable the feature.
- Navigate to the phone’s Settings.
- Select Network/Connections.
- Toggle the Wi-Fi Calling option to “On”.
For specific details regarding device compatibility, subscribers are advised to visit their nearest BSNL customer service center or contact the helpline at 1800-1503.
