Nokia rebuts Tamil Nadu Government’s tax claim, as acquisition nears

Nokia-X-Android-Phone-Unboxing-2

Nokia has been involved in a long term tax battle with the Indian government for more than a year now, and things don’t seem to be getting any better for the Espoo company. Adding fuel to this fire is the Tamil Nadu government, which has recently moved to assess sales tax for devices that are exported from the Chennai Sri Perumbudur manufacturing facility. Nokia claims that these allegations from the government are baseless, as, by law, exports are exempt from taxes. With yet another tax evasion claim, it will be even harder for Nokia to complete its transition in time for the Microsoft acquisition.

Nokia X can now access Google Play Store, unofficially ofcourse

Nokia X was launched less than a couple of weeks, but it has already been hacked. That is the thing about Android smartphones – you can get root user access and do things that wouldn’t be otherwise possible. As rumored, Nokia introduced an Android smartphone at MWC 2014, but with their own restrictions. Nokia had completely removed Google from the equation and pushed a lot of its own code and Nokia X series devices use Microsoft’s services instead of Google.

Nokia X Family captured in Video

At MWC 2014 in Barcelona, Nokia announced a series of devices that defied its partnership with Microsoft a couple of years back. Finally, Nokia announced its own Android running smartphones. But there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. Nokia hasn’t embraced Google or its services through Android, but opened up Microsoft’s services via Android fork.

Nokia X series to have free SwiftKey X keyboard

Nokia has just announced its first series of Android powered smartphones, but with a heavy layer of customization. Nokia are using just the Android and instead of using Google’s cloud service, Nokia are using Microsoft’s cloud service. In addition to that, they are also heavily customizing the UI which looks like a mix of Asha’s Fastlane UI and Microsoft Windows Phone 8 UI.

Nokia Lumia 630 press image leaks ahead of launch

nokia-lumia-630-press-image

Just a day before the Nokia press conference at the Mobile World Congress, the Nokia Lumia 630 has appeared in the form of a press image. Evleaks, the prolific twitter account known for accurate leaks had posted this image with no extra information. The Lumia 620 was launched at Le Web sometime last year and the 630 clearly looks like a similarly designed successor. With a similarly small and rounded design, the Lumia 630 might just be an evolution in the internals rather than a full fledged successor with a different design.

Nokia Lumia Icon heads to Verizon, packs Snapdragon 800 processor & 5 inch 1080p display

700-nokia_lumia_icon_white_group-2

The long rumored Nokia Lumia Icon has finally been announced and it packs quite a punch. The device that is exclusive to Verizon, combines the specifications of the Lumia 1520 with the size of the Nokia Lumia 928. The phone sports a 5 inch OLED display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. Packed into the five inch frame this gives it a pixel density of 441ppi. The dimensions of the phone are fairly svelte at 5.39” x 2.79” x 0.39” inches while the weight comes in at 166 grams. The Lumia Icon is wrapped in a metallic shell with ceramic keys which should help it look and feel decidedly less plasticky compared to the Lumia 928.  Continue reading “Nokia Lumia Icon heads to Verizon, packs Snapdragon 800 processor & 5 inch 1080p display”

Nokia’s Android phone will reportedly be revealed at MWC 2014

Nokia Normandy Android phone leak

Rumoured to be a successor to the Asha series of devices, Nokia is apparently preparing to launch its Android-based low cost devices at the Mobile World Congress event this year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The phone had repeatedly leaked out, with images of hardware and images of software, which point to a phone with a Windows Phone-like UI and Android underneath, enabling it to run Android apps. The “forked” Android OS, developed by Nokia, will feature Microsoft’s services prominently, not Google services or Play, which means that there will still be a distinct lack of Google apps on the platform. Previously brushed off as a improbable launch, especially after the Microsoft acquisition, it seems like the Nokia X aka Normandy will possibly be making a N9-style debut at MWC this year.

HTC and Nokia enter patent, technology licensing agreement

nokia htc patent licensing 2014

Last year an ITC Judge ruled that HTC infringed on two essential patents owned by Nokia. Stephen Elop will lead Microsoft’s Expanded Devices team, working on Xbox, Surface and Nokia

nokia-ceo-stephen-elop-asha-501 copy

Stephen Elop, the ex-CEO from Nokia, will be heading the expanded devices team at Microsoft, as per reports. Previously rumoured to be in the running for the top job at Microsoft, Stephen Elop now gets to lead the newly formed team, like previously agreed upon. This is pretty obvious now, as Microsoft just announced its newest CEO, Satya Nadella, who takes over the position from Steve Ballmer. Elop stepped down from his role as the CEO of Nokia immediately after the announcement of Nokia-Microsoft acquisition, to avoid a conflict of interests.

Windows Phone 8.1 rumoured to arrive in April

nokia-lumia-1520-review-28

Windows Phone 8.1 codenamed “Blue” has been rumoured for a long time now, ever since Microsoft confirmed the existence of Windows 8.1(also codenamed “Blue”). While Windows 8.1 has seen its release right on time, with a developer preview in June last year and commercial release by October, we are yet to see even a glimpse of Windows Phone 8.1, which we were hoping to be delivered as fast as the first Windows 8 update. Now, fresh rumours from reliable Mary Jo Foley, ZDNet, reveal that Windows Phone is all set for a April reveal, with developers getting the preview first and general availability later. This comes after rumours of a Cortana reveal, which is a virtual assistant and very much a part of Windows Phone that coincides with Microsoft’s developer event at the same time – Build 2014.
