Xiaomi discontinues further MIUI 9 development to focus on stability and system optimizations, MIUI 10 expected soon

Update: Xiaomi just confirmed that after the latest update of public MIUI 9 Global Developer ROM, updates for MIUI 9 Global Beta ROM will be suspended for all devices. The company said that updates are expected to be resumed after July, 2018. This might be based on MIUI 10 since the MIUI 9 was introduced at the same time.

Xiaomi said that closed beta and public beta will be suspended for any major version changes of MIUI after MIUI 9 for Redmi Note 2 and Redmi 3. MIUI 9 Global Developer ROM 8.4.19 will be the last update for these devices.
MIUI 9.6 Global Stable ROM for Redmi Note 2 and Redmi 3 is expected  to be released around July, 2018.

It also said that some Android 5.X and Android 4.X devices will remain on developer ROM and won’t support the subsequent major MIUI updates considering the stability and user experience.

Earlier: Xiaomi announced MIUI 9 back in July 2017 in an event in China that brought various new features including Split Screen, Smart app launcher, Universal Image search, Notifications Filter, Smart Assistant and more. Later, in November 2017, the company announced Global version of MIUI 9 with  New Gallery App, Calendar Cards, New Notification Shade, App Vault, Mi Video App, New Mi Explorer and Mi Drop.

Earlier this year, the company’s co-founder and vice president Hong Feng confirmed that company has started development of next iteration of MIUI, and it will be called MIUI 10 (not X). With MIUI 10, company’s focus will be on improving user experience using AI and Machine learning algorithms. In the same event, it was mentioned that company will remain focused on MIUI 9 development. Yesterday, MIUI forum Admins posted announcement related to MIUI China ROM and said that company is suspending MIUI 9 Beta ROM updates for some time. The post says,

To achieve better system stability and optimization, MIUI will release the last Development/Alpha ROM 8.4.26 on 27th April 2018. Thereafter, MIUI developers will focus on system optimization, which will continue for a period of time. It’s expected that the update will be resumed in June and we will keep you updated.

In the meantime, in consideration of stability and user experience, some Android 5.X devices will remain on developer/alpha ROM and won’t support the subsequent major changes.

Admins didn’t mention about development of MIUI 10 in the post but mentioned that devices based on Android 5.x will no longer be supported for any major MIUI update. Admins also mentioned that Redmi Note 2, Redmi 3, Redmi Note 3 MTK and Mi Pad 2 are not compatible for MIUI 10 update and MIUI 8.4.26 will be the last MIUI China Beta ROM update for these devices.

Users of these devices can choose to stay on MIUI China Beta ROM or switch to MIUI 9.6 China Stable ROM update which is expected to be released in June or July and will be final Stable update. The announcement doesn’t affect devices launched by Xiaomi in India, Xiaomi had already confirmed that MIUI 9.2 was final update for some devices and shared the list of devices.

Just before the MIUI 9 Global ROM announcement Mi Community admin shared a similar post regarding suspension of MIUI Global Beta ROM. Xiaomi is currently rolling out MIUI 9.5 Global Stable ROM, MIUI 7.5 and MIUI 8.5 were the last updates in MIUI 7 and MIUI 8 series respectively, and it seems that MIUI 9.5 will also be the last update in MIUI 9 series. If that’s the case, we might be just couple of month away from MIUI 10.
