Google Glass loses invite-only purchase in the US, but only for a limited time

Google Glass, the Mountain View company’s first wearable product that took the world by storm, started out as a preview, with an invite-only explorer program. But in a turn of events, Google will be selling the Explorer edition of Glass to anyone in the US, but with a tiny catch. It will be available only for a limited time frame, and only on April 15th, when it will be out for anyone to buy. All you have to do is sign up with your details on this page and you will be able to get the Glass on the 15th, but of course you have to be a US citizen and have to pay the same 1500$ price. But the upside is, you get a frame or shade, according to your preferences and there is no extra cost associated with it.

Google updates Chrome for Android Beta with new features

Google seems to be spending a lot of time and resources in adding features and functionality to its suite of applications that come with an Android smartphone. Rumors are floating around that Google is planning a complete visual overhaul of its Gmail application and Google Calendar application. In the meantime, Google has updated its mobile browser – Chrome for Beta with some much needed features.

Android’s Verify Apps feature to continuously monitor for malware

All devices running Android 2.2 and above come with a “Verify Apps” feature built into the Google Settings application. So far this feature has been used to scan apps while installing. The feature would kick in whenever a user would install an APK file obtained from other than the Play Store. Going forward, Google is pushing out an update to flesh out this functionality. Google’s Project Ara gains a Modular Development Kit

Google might have sold off Motorola to Lenovo, but is keeping all those patents and research teams close to Mountain View. Motorola’s R&D initially unveiled a concept called “Ara”, the first modular smartphone that has the potential to totally change the way we look at, and buy smartphones. The concept is pretty simple, as it follows the typical “Build you own PC” method, which grants you the flexibility of choice in interesting permutations and combinations. Ara now belongs to Google, and naturally, we are seeing some momentum here, with them announcing a Modular Development Kit, using which hardware manufacturers or “Module Developers” can create different modules that will eventually turn up on your own custom Ara phone.

Google is rumored to be testing new versions of GMail and Google Calendar app for Android. According to rumors, they point towards a big visual overhaul of the user interface and user experience. Google Calendar is reportedly getting a makeover making it look more like iOS calendar.

Google Glass with a Titanium thin Frame – Unboxing and Demo

Ever since we heard about Google Glass getting less geeky with new frames that could support prescription lenses, we wanted to try one. We promptly ordered one once Google started taking those elusive orders, and what we have here now with us, is a Titanium thin frame, in Charcoal colour that will stop making us look like Glassholes. Yes, it is just a frame with plain lenses that lets you attach your old Google Glass to it, but it suddenly makes it way less intimidating than before. Essentially, you will stop looking like a cyborg with an extra eye and the frame will now hide the glass apparatus somewhat, making it a better blend than before. Google adds new “People” section in Play Store, shows you what others are downloading

Google has just added another feature to its Play Store. This time, it doesn’t have anything to do with the apps or the way your apps update. But, it brings a little social interest to your Play Store. You now get a “People” tab in the side navigation bar and when you choose it, you get a list of what other people are downloading.

Google makes In-App Content search global and introduces support for new apps

Google had earlier announced that it will soon be allowing users to search for content within applications. For example, if you search for a movie, then you will be prompted for a search result that will open inside the IMDB app if you have it installed. This feature was announced by Google sometime back and has been in use for a limited geographic area. Now, Google has expanded the availability of this in app search to global users.

Google reportedly makes ‘Powered By Android’ boot logo mandatory

Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8 had “Powered By Android” logo at the bottom of the boot screen. Google has made it mandatory for all the Android devices as a part of Google Mobile Services agreement, according to a report from Geek.com. All the devices that are part of GMS has Google Play Store, Mail etc. Logo placement also has its own separate set of guidelines from Google. Google signs a deal for Google Glass with the eye wear giant Luxottica which includes Ray-Ban and Oakley

Google is definitely considering the wearable market as its next battleground and it is equipping itself in the process. Earlier in 2013, Google announced that they will be launching the Explorer Edition of Google Glass for $1500 and eventually it will come to the market at a much lower price point. Last week, they announced Android Wear SDK for wearables(read smartwatches).

Google rumored to be working on a 8.9inch Nexus tablet

Google has been targeting audience with great products at affordable products through their Nexus line up. The smartphones – Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 are an example of that. Each of the device offers the best in class performance for a considerably affordable price point. They did the similar thing with the tablets as well – Google Nexus 7 and Nexus 7 2013 – offering great features for an affordable price. It looks like things could change.

Google has added new voice commands to Google Search for Android that lets you launch the camera app to take a photo or record a video by speaking respective commands. Google Search already has an option to open apps just by saying “Open Instagram” or “Open Facebook”.
