The authorities of Delhi Government has warned online taxi service Uber and Ola on resuming operations. The Transport Department of Delhi Government has asked the services to cease their operations in Delhi or their application for radio-taxi licenses will not be processed.

Late last year, Uber was banned from India following rape allegations and although the firm has now re-launhced in New Delhi, it comes with a promise of better safety practices. To this effect, the service is planning an update to its app and will launch an in-app panic button and the ability to send details of your trip and current location to up to five individuals. Uber and others will have to install panic buttons to continue operations in Delhi

Online taxi services including Uber may make a comeback in Delhi. The Delhi Transport Department has modified Radio Taxi scheme for 2006 to allow these services to continue its operations.

Last night, news broke of a woman passenger allegedly raped by a Uber driver, in New Delhi. Hearing accounts of rape and violence against women is not new in this country, sadly, but what makes this even more shocking is the association with Uber, a disruptive mobile-first taxi platform that claims to have the “safest rides on the road“. According to the well-funded American startup’s website, safety is the second most important thing you need to know about them, right after the app, one of the most important user-facing features of their platform. For a company that prides itself on safety features, this is terrible news. Why and how did Uber let this happen? There are many answers to this question, but let’s give them a shot of reality first, with a warm message they can resonate with, “Welcome to India.”.
