Apple has just announced that they have achieved $10 billion sales on the App Store in 2013 . Customers have downloaded almost 3 billion apps in December alone since it is the holiday season, an all time record in the App Store history that made $1 billion revenue in the month. After several reports, Bitspin has confirmed that Google has indeed acquired the markers of Timely alarm clock app for Android. It also announced that the app is now free forever, including in-app purchases. It would work with Google to build new apps. These companies did not reveal the price of the deal. Carbon, one of the popular third party Twitter clients has recently received a massive overhaul. Carbon is considered one of the better Twitter clients because of its buttery smooth UI and minimal design. The Carbon team pushed the version 2 just in time for New Year and it brought along a major redesign.
The starting screen that you see is your timeline. Swiping right takes you to the mentions and swiping right once more takes you to the direct messages. This is the basic structure of the application and it makes it quite easy and smooth to navigate between them. You can swipe up or down with two fingers to reach the top or bottom of the timeline respectively. This can be particularly useful if you want to go back to the top after checking out a lot of tweets.
A single click on the tweet will make the links, hashtags and mentions clickable. It also displays a quick action menu that lets you retweet, favorite or share the tweet. When you double tap a tweet, it will let you edit and retweet it. Swiping right from edge brings the favorites menu that has your favorites, retweets and recent searches. You can compose a new tweet with the + sign along with your display picture on the bottom right corner. The latest redesign also changed the way a profile is display and the new look is just gorgeous. Clicking on the Profile picture at the bottom right reveals a small menu with the settings icon and links to your profile.

It comes bundled with 20 preset backgrounds and has option to download more backgrounds. The two-way chat theme feature allows either of the users to set or change the background anytime during the chat and is also applicable to group chats. Facebook for Windows Phone has received a major update to version 5.2, that brings a lot of new features including new chat notifications, new secondary tiles for chat, events, groups, pages, and photo albums, supports for all the 50 languages that are currently supported in Windows Phone 8. Sony has launched Sony LIV, premium video-on-demand service for BlackBerry 10 smartphones. The Sony LIV app is available for BlackBerry Z10 and Z30 smartphones from the BlackBerry World. The app comes pre-loaded on Sony Smartphones and is also available on iPhone and Windows Phone 8 devices. Foursquare for Android has been updated (v2013-12-19) with a completely new user interface that is more flatter, similar to iOS 7. Foursquare for iPhone got updated with redesigned iOS 7 look earlier this month that also added new features, but the new Android update doesn’t add any new features. The Windows Phone App store is finally catching up with iOS and Android apps, recently we saw Instagram come to Windows Phone followed by the popular game, Subway Surfers. The next app to join the Windows Phone store, which now boasts more than 200,000 apps is the official app of 500px. 500px is easily one of the most popular photography social networks and there were numerous third party applications on the Windows Phone store but not the official app. That hole has been plugged as 500px have finally launched a Windows Phone application.

It’s always fascinating to see the growth of a communications platform. The mobile phone grew worldwide thanks to a company called Nokia that connected people with calls and SMS as the medium, but in this age of apps and Smartphones, it’s Whatsapp that’s doing all the connecting. We have been watching its explosive growth over the course of two years, and it has been really interesting. Today, the company’s blog has announced that the service has crossed a whopping 400 million monthly active users, with almost a quarter of them – 100 million added in the last four months. This is seen as a huge growth for a space, in which there is suddenly a lot of competition, with some of them even willing to shell out big bucks for TV promotions and so on. However, it remains to be seen if people embrace choice or go for ubiquity.
