Wikipedia has revamped the iOS app with new features and added support for 3D Touch. The redesign which bumps the app to version 5.0 focuses on bringing better customized and personalization features.

Wikipedia for Android gets Material Design features

Wikipedia has updated its Android app with Material Design features. The latest update brings a refreshed look to the app and improves the UI and search.

First up, the app puts more focus on images and articles now feature a contextual header image and tapping other pictures displays them in a pop-up with a caption. Users will not need to text re-size in order to match their device as images expand and fit to your screen in a tap. Now a;; galleries of images are organized in a swiping format.

‘Read More’ section at the end of each page will show links related to the article. The search functionality has been improved and includes more defined and higher contrast search bar and a list of recently searched topics. Finally, the latest update adds an image viewer that allows users to view a larger version of any image via a pop-up panel (image appears unobscured if tapped on) and swipe left or right to view the previous or next image.

Google Search testing interactive timeline powered by Wikipedia content

Google is developing a Knowledge graph tool that pulls data from Wikipedia to create interactive timelines based on the item being searched.  The feature generates content from Wikipedia in a periodic manner about search queries.

Wikipedia for Windows Phone 8.1 updated with Cortana support

Windows Phone 8.1 has been out as a developer preview for just a little more than a week, but we are already seeing developers updating their apps to support the OS’ new features. Among the many apps being updated is Wikipedia, developed by Rudy Huyn. This app is the closest to an official app from one of the world’s largest resources for information, as it is made by a popular third party developer with Wikipedia themselves approving and endorsing it for the platform. The app now has been updated to include support for Cortana, the new personal voice assistant and one of the major new features of the OS. Once updated, the v2.3 will let you directly search for topics using your voice by giving simple commands to Cortana.

Wikipedia Nearby for mobile web launched, shows location-based information

Wikipedia Nearby

WikimediaFoundation has launched Nearby feature for mobile web that shows Wikipedia articles near your location that would let you explore the nearby places and view images. The photo upload features was launched for mobile web back in March. You can log in using your Wikipedia credentials to upload photos. Now you can also take part in improving details about your nearby location by adding an image to the article if it’s missing. You can notice the missing image with a camera icon next to the articles. Wikipedia app now available for Android

Wikipedia app is finally available for Android. This would let the users search articles nearby, share articles using Android Share function, read article in a different language and more. This official app by Wikimedia Foundation is already available for iPhone. The iPhone app has also received updates such as geo service for near by and some crash and bug fixes.
