iPhone 8 tipped to replace Touch ID home button with “function area”

A new report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities says that the next iPhone will not have the home button and instead sport ‘virtual buttons. Kuo also believes the iPhone 8 will use a 5.8-inch OLED display of which 5.15 inches will be used for screen content while the rest is being reserved for a “function area” at the bottom that will house virtual buttons.

A report in May stated that Apple will refresh its MacBook Pro lineup in 2016 with thinner and lighter design. Apple opens Touch ID API for all applications

Last year, Apple introduced the iPhone 5s with its Touch ID sensor on board. This fingerprint reader built into the home button itself was intimately tied in to the operating system. It allowed for a seamless way to unlock the device, offered a few more security related functions.

With the launch of iOS 8, developers will be able to use the Touch ID API to enable authentication for users. This’ll work in two ways. Developers can either use fingerprint based authentication for applications and in case of more sensitive use cases, offer Touch ID as a secondary means of authentication. TSMC switching to 8 inch processing for TouchID sensors

TSMC or the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is responsible for manufacturing Touch ID sensors for the Apple iPhone. Apple had previously contracted TSMC to produce fingerprint sensors at their 12 inch processing facility using a 65nm process. Due to risks associated with the 12 inch Wafer Level Packaging (WLP) process, the production yield has so far been limited to between 70-80%.
