USB4 specification released: Thunderbolt 3 support, 40Gbps bandwidth and more

Intel has announced that it contributed the Intel Thunderbolt protocol specification to the USB Promoter Group, enabling other chip makers to build Thunderbolt compatible silicon that is royalty free. Additionally, USB Promoter Group announced the pending release of the USB4 specification, based on the Thunderbolt protocol. Apple MacBook Pro 2016 reportedly incompatible with current Thunderbolt 3 devices

Apple included four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports in the new MacBook Pro, but unfortunately these don’t work with the older Thunderbolt 3 accessories or with the existing Certified Thunderbolt 3 docks and adapters, as learned by the accessory manufacturer Plugable from series of tests. Intel has introduced Thunderbolt 3, the next-generation Thunderbolt with USB-C connector offering 40Gbps speed, double the speed of Thunderbolt 2 and four times faster than USB 3.1. For the first time, one computer port connects to Thunderbolt devices, every display, and billions of USB devices, said the company. A single cable can provide four times the data and twice the video bandwidth of any other cable, while supplying power. It supports two 4K 60 Hz displays and notebook charging up to 100W with a single cable.
