Earlier we had reported on mobile processor supporting upto 20 MP camera modules.

Toshiba has announced their new 14.6 Megapixel CMOS sensor for cellphones. This will be the highest megapixel offering witht the current camera phones packing upto 12 Megapixels.

The sensor feature backside illumination too instead of the normal front side illumination.

The backside illumination will allow better and brighter images with a smaller sensor. Toshiba claims light absorption is boosted by 40%, resulting in bright pictures despite the high-density 1/2.3-inch sensor.

Production should start by ed of 2009 but it will not go into mass production until 2010. This means that it will be sometime before we can see these sensors integrated into mobile phones.
