Vi 5G services launched in Chennai; roll out in more Tamil Nadu cities and Pondicherry by May

Vi has officially launched its 5G services in Chennai. With this deployment, Vi’s 5G network is now active in all five major Indian metropolitan cities—Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Chennai—as well as 50 other cities nationwide.

Nationwide and Regional Expansion Plans

The Chennai launch is part of Vi’s broader 5G rollout strategy, which targets a total footprint of 133 cities across 17 priority circles. Earlier this month, the company outlined plans to introduce its 5G network to 90 additional cities across India.

In the Tamil Nadu region, the company is prioritizing industrial hubs, high-data-consumption centers, and emerging urban clusters. By May 2026, Vi plans to extend its 5G services to the following locations:

  • Coimbatore, Salem, and Tiruppur: Key industrial centers.
  • Vellore: A regional healthcare and education hub.
  • Tiruchirappalli (Trichy): A major educational and commercial center.
  • Pondicherry: The neighboring Union Territory.
  • Technology and Infrastructure

To facilitate the network rollout and manage performance, Vi has partnered with Nokia to install energy-efficient infrastructure. The deployment utilizes Artificial Intelligence-powered Self-Optimizing Networks (SON), which are designed to automatically regulate and optimize overall network performance.

The company recently announced a three-season sponsorship agreement with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), serving as the team’s Official Communications Partner.

Commenting on the launch, Sai Venkataraman, Circle Business Head – Tamil Nadu, Vi said:

We are accelerating the expansion of Vi’s 5G network across Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry, strengthening our footprint across key markets in the state. The launch in Chennai, along with our existing presence in Madurai and upcoming rollouts in cities like Coimbatore, Trichy, Salem, Tiruppur and Vellore, marks an important step in this journey. Our investments in strengthening the network, combined with the growing adoption of our Unlimited Data plans like Vi Non-Stop Hero are driving strong growth in data consumption. We remain focused on delivering a superior network experience as we bring next-generation connectivity to more customers across the circle.
