IFA 2019: Qualcomm announces 5G expansion across Snapdragon 8 Series, 7 Series, 6 Series, Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module and 5G Modem-RF System

At the IFA 2019 event in Berlin, Qualcomm has made announcements related to 5G and the key announcements include expansion of 5G mobile platforms across the Snapdragon 8 Series, 7 Series and 6 Series in 2020, Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module and Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System.

Qualcomm 5G expansion

Qualcomm has announced their plans to accelerate 5G global commercialization at scale by expanding its portfolio of 5G mobile platforms across the Snapdragon 8 Series, 7 Series and 6 Series in 2020. It plans to make the next-generation of camera, video, AI and gaming experiences more broadly available. The Snapdragon 7 Series 5G Mobile Platform will have 5G integrated into an SoC and support all key regions and frequency bands.

The new integrated Snapdragon 7 Series 5G mobile platform is planned to be used by OPPO, realme, Redmi, Vivo, Motorola, HMD Global, the home of Nokia smartphones, and LG Electronics in their future 5G smartphones. It will begin sampling to customers in the second quarter of 2019. Snapdragon 6 Series 5G Mobile Platform devices, on the other hand, are expected to be commercially available in the second half of 2020.

Qualcomm QTM527

Alongside the 5G expansion announcement, Qualcomm has also introduced the Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module for the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System. It will allow mobile operators to offer fixed internet broadband services to homes and businesses using their 5G network infrastructure and with a plug-and-play, multi-gigabit alternative to cable and fibre. It also extends coverage in urban, suburban and rural environments. This full system solution includes

  • beamforming
  • beam steering beam tracking for bi-directional communication
  • global band support

Qualcomm says that the QTM527 expands the capabilities of the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System to deliver a comprehensive modem-to-antenna platform for flexible, cost-effective, high-performance 5G mmWave customer-premises equipment (CPE) designs. It is sampling to customers and the first high-power mmWave CPE devices are expected to arrive in the first half of 2020.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System

Qualcomm has announced a name for world’s first commercial chipset solution combining modem, RF Transceiver and RF Front-End. Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF System is the name now for these differentiated solutions. Qualcomm says that this is built from the ground up to address some of the most difficult 5G challenges and to date, there are more than 150 5G designs launched or in development using Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF Systems.

The Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System is currently shipping to OEM customers and it is scheduled to be in commercial devices including 5G smartphones, laptops, customer-premise equipment for fixed wireless access, mobile hotspots, routers and automotive products, beginning in late 2019.
