HMD Global had already promised 2 years of Android updates and two years of regular security updates for its smartphones, and it has delivered updates as it had promised. Phones like Nokia 3 that was introduced back in June 2017 got its third major update to Android Pie earlier this year.
As the two-year period draws to a close for Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3, the company has announced that these phones will be able to receive quarterly security patch updates right through to the end of the 3rd year, which is till 2020. “To ensure you’ll be up to date, these quarterly releases will include all patches from the previous months,” said the company.
Nokia phone Quarterly security update timeframe:
- Nokia 3 – Quarterly patch begins from September 2019 until September 2020
- Nokia 5 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
- Nokia 6 (Except USA and India)- Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
- Nokia 8 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
This doesn’t apply to all the 2017 devices. Nokia 6 sold on Amazon in USA and Nokia 6 Indian version will get security patch support only till October 2019. Nokia 2 that was launched in 2017 running Android 7.1.1 (Nougat) OS, got manual option to update to Android 8.1 (Oreo) earlier this year. Now, the company has announced that it will get security patch support only till November 2019.
Offering one more year of security updates is definitely a great move by the company, even though it’s quarterly. Hope it will extend this same additional year of updates to other phones released in 2018 and this year as well.
Regarding this, Nokia on its forum said:
We aim to be completely transparent when it comes to updates and software. That’s why we want to ensure that Nokia smartphone fans know when their model will no longer receive the security updates they’ve been used to. This will apply to the full Nokia smartphone family – so everyone can benefit from a smartphone that stays secure for longer.
