HONOR has officially confirmed that its upcoming Magic9 series smartphones will incorporate ARRI color science, marking a direct collaboration between the consumer electronics brand and the cinema camera manufacturer.
The devices are scheduled for formal unveiling at the HONOR Magic Grand Ceremony in Beijing on September 28.
Cinema Color Pipeline and Encoding
The integration with ARRI brings several cinema-standard image-processing tools to the smartphone line. According to Honor, the Magic9 series will feature:
- ARRI Wide Gamut 3 (AWG3): A broad color space designed to capture nuanced color transitions and preserve dynamic range.
- ARRI LogC3 Video Pipeline: Standard logarithmic gamma curve support to facilitate color grading in professional post-production environments.
- Official ARRI Look Library: Pre-configured visual styles developed by ARRI for direct in-camera application.
- ARRI Picture Video (APV) Lossless Encoding: High-bitrate compression engineered to minimize visual compression artifacts in captured footage.
- ARRI Movie Mode: A dedicated shooting interface and profile intended to replicate professional cinema workflows.
Camera Hardware Specifications
Co-developed with ARRI, the rear camera assembly adopts a centered design labeled by the manufacturer as the “Big Eye.” The system is positioned as a cinema-focused triple-camera setup, anchored by an ARRI dual 200MP ultra-high-resolution imaging system.
Additionally, the hardware marks the debut of HONOR’s 500mm teleconverter, extending the focal length capabilities for long-range capture. Together, the hardware and software additions are targeted at users seeking production-grade video capture within a mobile form factor.
