Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, marking the company’s first entry into the foldable smartphone market. The device incorporates a dual-screen format powered by the newly introduced A20 Pro chip, a redesigned enclosure, and an updated operating system tailored for adaptable screen configurations.
Hardware and Display Architecture

When unfolded, the iPhone Duo measures as Apple’s thinnest smartphone to date, featuring a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display. Closed, it functions via a 5.4-inch outer display engineered to provide roughly 90 percent of the active screen area found on the standard Pro-tier hardware.

Both panels share identical aspect ratios to maintain visual continuity when transitioning between states, and both support ProMotion, Always-On functionality, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. A matte nano-texture finish on the inner display is designed to reduce ambient glare and obscure the folding crease.
An under-display FaceTime camera sits beneath the folding screen to avoid cutouts, while the side button integrates Touch ID for biometric authentication. Apple also confirmed future support for the Apple Pencil with USB-C across both displays.

Structurally, the chassis utilizes grade 5 titanium with a 3D-printed hinge cover and internal structural ribbing. The hinge assembly contains more than 100 components configured to manage fold resistance and panel support, while the glass structure relies on custom adhesives that allow internal layers to slide during movement to alleviate bend stress. Ceramic Shield protects the rear panel, complemented by Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer cover glass. The entire unit maintains an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Performance, Battery, and Connectivity
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s 2-nanometer A20 Pro system-on-chip, incorporating:

- A 6-core CPU offering up to 20 percent higher speeds than the A19 Pro.
- A 7-core GPU delivering up to 40 percent faster graphics rendering.
- A Dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to double on-device AI compute capability.
- A 50 percent increase in unified memory bandwidth alongside a dedicated display engine to run both screens concurrently.
To manage thermal output, the internal package integrates a custom vapor chamber directly with the SoC. Internal power is handled via a split dual-battery layout with dynamic energy rebalancing, rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen, up to 44 hours on the outer panel, or approximately 24 hours of mixed dual-display usage.
Fast wired charging reaches 50 percent capacity in approximately 20 minutes, with MagSafe and Qi2 wireless alternatives reaching 50 percent in 30 minutes.
The device is eSIM-only globally. Networking is managed by two proprietary silicon modules: the N1 chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, and the C2 modem, which handles cellular connectivity, including U.S. mmWave.
Camera Hardware and Features
The rear camera array pairs a 48MP Fusion Main sensor (with 2x optical crop and sensor-shift stabilization) with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera capable of macro capture. Video capabilities include 4K Dolby Vision capture at up to 120 fps, post-capture Cinematic adjustment at 60 fps, and algorithmic audio isolation.
The folding form factor introduces several capture configurations:
- Duo Preview: Displays the viewfinder on the outer screen while framing subjects.
- Smart Take: Automatically triggers shutter capture using on-device scene analysis when subjects pose.
- Rear Selfies: Allows the user to utilize the primary rear camera while monitoring framing via the outer screen.
- Kid Cue & Duo FaceTime: Plays external animations to draw focus, or routes secondary callers through the outer display during group conversations.
Software
The hardware operates on iOS 27, which shifts core interface components—including the Dock, Dynamic Island, and navigation elements—to lateral orientations to optimize vertical screen real estate. The operating system introduces native Split View to run two apps simultaneously, side-by-side app pairing, dual-window app instances, and an expanded StandBy mode functional across both screens without continuous external power. The software also introduces Siri AI, a conversational interface running on Apple Intelligence that draws from local device context, alongside photographic manipulation tools like Spatial Reframing and SynthID watermarking standards.
