Apple has introduced AirPods 5, its latest open-ear AirPods model with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).
AirPods 5
AirPods 5 feature an all-new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Their open-ear ANC removes up to 50% more external noise compared to AirPods 4 with ANC, using improved computational audio algorithms.
Other audio features include:
- Improved Transparency mode for voices and nearby sounds
- Adaptive Audio that blends Transparency mode and ANC based on the environment
- Conversation Awareness that lowers media volume when the user starts speaking
- Personalized Spatial Audio
- Improved dust, sweat, and water resistance
The acoustic architecture and Adaptive EQ were re-engineered for AirPods 5, with Apple saying they provide richer and more detailed sound across a wider range of ear geometries.
For Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone users, AirPods 5 provide hands-free access to Siri AI. Siri can use personal context from messages, emails, photos, and other content, perform actions in apps, and answer questions using broad world knowledge.
Users can ask Siri to play a song recommended by a friend in a message or navigate to a dinner reservation from an email confirmation. Siri AI also offers customizable expressive voices, improved Dictation, and support for apps including WhatsApp and Audible, while Siri Interactions let users respond with head gestures such as nodding for yes or shaking their head for no.
Live Translation uses Apple Intelligence to translate conversations between languages. After downloading the required languages in the Translate app, users can start it by:
- Pressing both AirPods stems simultaneously
- Saying “Siri, start Live Translation”
- Using the Action button on an iPhone
Users can hear the conversation in their preferred language. Live Translation uses ANC and computational audio and is available across the entire AirPods lineup.
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add a force sensor with volume swipe, allowing users to adjust volume by swiping up or down on the stem. Apple says this is the first time volume swipe is available on its open-ear AirPods.
Battery and charging details include:
- Up to 5 hours of playback with ANC on a single charge
- One hour longer battery life than AirPods 4 with ANC
- Up to 22 hours of listening with ANC using the charging case
- Support for Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers, and USB-C
Sustainability
AirPods 5 use 40% recycled material overall, while the wireless charging case contains 70% recycled plastic and the battery uses 100% recycled cobalt.
Apple says 35% renewable energy, including wind and solar, is used across the supply chain. The earbuds meet Apple’s standards for energy efficiency and safe chemistry, while the paper packaging is 100% fiber-based and can be recycled at home. The products contribute to Apple’s plan to become carbon neutral across its entire footprint by 2030.

Pre-orders are now open in India, the U.S., and more than 65 other countries and regions, with availability starting September 18.
