
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its telecom subscription data for June 2026, showing further growth in India’s telecom sector. The total telephone subscriber base increased to 1,348.08 million at the end of June 2026, compared to 1,343.10 million in May 2026, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.37%.
Wireless services accounted for most of the subscriber growth during the month, with wireless connections crossing the 1.3 billion mark. Broadband subscriptions also increased, while newer connectivity segments such as 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and M2M cellular connections recorded growth.
Wireless subscriber base crosses 1.3 billion
India’s overall wireless subscriber base, including mobile and FWA connections, increased by 5.79 million during June 2026 to reach 1,300.25 million. The urban wireless subscriber base stood at 749.39 million, while rural connections reached 550.86 million.

The overall tele-density increased from 94.02% in May 2026 to 94.31% in June 2026. Urban tele-density stood at 153.43%, while rural tele-density reached 60.89%.
Urban areas accounted for 58.76% of the total telephone subscriber base with 792.06 million connections, while rural areas contributed 556.01 million subscribers, representing 41.24% of the total base.
The wireless mobile subscriber base, including M2M cellular connections, reached 1,282.38 million. Private telecom operators accounted for 92.73% of the wireless mobile market, while PSU operators BSNL and MTNL together held 7.27%.
The wireless mobile subscriber market share at the end of June 2026 was:
- Reliance Jio: 39.27%
- Bharti Airtel: 37.96%
- Vodafone Idea: 15.50%
- BSNL: 7.25%

The wireless mobile subscriber base increased by 5.38 million during June 2026. Bharti Airtel recorded the highest addition during the month, followed by Reliance Jio.
Operator-wise wireless mobile subscriber additions:
- Bharti Airtel: +2.99 million
- Reliance Jio: +2.14 million
- Vodafone Idea: +163,757
- BSNL: +94,006
In contrast, wireline subscriptions declined during the month. The wireline subscriber base dropped from 48.64 million in May 2026 to 47.82 million in June 2026, registering a monthly decline of 1.67%.
Vi adds subscribers for fifth consecutive month
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has posted net subscriber additions for the fifth consecutive month in June 2026. The company added 163,757 subscribers during the month, taking its total subscriber base to 198.82 million.
The company added subscribers across nine telecom circles, including Uttar Pradesh (East), Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, Assam, and Bihar driven by network expansion and service improvements.
Vi 5G services are available across more than 200 cities.
Broadband subscriptions cross 1.08 billion
India’s broadband subscriber base increased from 1,080.15 million in May 2026 to 1,087.50 million in June 2026, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.68%.
Mobile broadband remained the largest segment with 1,021.43 million connections, while wired broadband reached 47.71 million connections and fixed wireless broadband stood at 18.36 million connections.
Reliance Jio remained the largest broadband service provider, followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.
Top broadband providers in June 2026:
- Reliance Jio: 532.21 million subscribers
- Bharti Airtel: 379.97 million subscribers
- Vodafone Idea: 130.13 million subscribers
- BSNL: 27.44 million subscribers
- Atria Convergence Technologies: 2.45 million subscribers
The top five broadband providers accounted for 98.59% of the broadband market. Jio held the highest share at 48.94%, followed by Airtel at 34.94% and Vodafone Idea at 11.97%.

5G FWA and M2M connections increase
The 5G FWA subscriber base increased from 12.73 million in May 2026 to 12.94 million in June 2026. The subscriber base was almost evenly divided between urban and rural areas, with 6.44 million urban subscribers and 6.49 million rural subscribers.
Bharti Airtel reported 3.82 million 5G FWA subscribers, while Reliance Jio reported 9.11 million subscribers at the end of June 2026.

The UBR-based FWA subscriber base increased to 4.93 million, with Reliance Jio being the only operator reporting UBR FWA subscriber numbers.
The M2M cellular mobile connections segment increased from 131.11 million in May 2026 to 134.73 million in June 2026.
M2M connections by operator:
- Bharti Airtel: 82.77 million
- Reliance Jio: 25.76 million
- Vodafone Idea: 21.62 million
- BSNL: 4.57 million
Bharti Airtel accounted for the largest share of M2M connections at 61.44%.
Active wireless subscribers cross 1.2 billion
TRAI’s Visitor Location Register (VLR) data showed that 1,201.06 million wireless mobile subscribers were active during the peak VLR period in June 2026, representing 93.66% of the total wireless mobile subscriber base.
Among the top four operators, Airtel reported an active subscriber ratio of 99.27%, followed by Reliance Jio at 99.07%, Vodafone Idea at 83.98%, and BSNL at 55.58%.

In terms of active subscriber numbers, Airtel recorded 483.23 million active subscribers out of its 486.80 million subscriber base, while Jio had 498.89 million active users from its 503.58 million subscriber base.
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) activity remained high during the month, with 14.78 million subscribers submitting porting requests.
Among telecom circles, Delhi recorded the highest tele-density at 368.12%, while Bihar reported the lowest at 63.95% at the end of June 2026.
Outlook
The June 2026 telecom data shows that growth is being driven by wireless adoption, broadband expansion, and newer connectivity segments such as 5G FWA and M2M services. While wireline connections declined during the month, wireless broadband and connected services recorded further growth.
