Nokia has extended its brand licensing agreement with HMD Global, allowing the latter to continue selling Nokia-branded feature phones for approximately another two-three years beyond its initial 2026 expiry. The decision provides operational continuity for both companies and underscores the enduring relevance of feature phones in key global markets.
Since 2016, HMD Global has been the exclusive licensee for the Nokia brand in mobile devices, a partnership that has seen the revival of classic models and the introduction of new feature phones and smartphones. The extension of the agreement, while not officially commented on by either company, has been widely reported by sources familiar with the matter.
This move is particularly significant for markets like India and China, where feature phones continue to be a substantial segment of the mobile landscape. India, in particular, remains the world’s largest feature phone market. According to market data from IDC, HMD Global commands a dominant position in India’s feature phone segment, with a market share of over 22% by volume and nearly 31% by value in 2024.
The extension of the deal will allow HMD to maintain its strong presence and capitalize on this demand.
