Apple begins assembling iPhone SE 2020 in India

Apple has started assembling the latest iPhone SE 2020 smartphone in India at Wistron facility in Bengaluru, after it was launched in April. This comes after the company started assembling the iPhone 11, locally in India at the Foxconn plant near Chennai. The company started selling the iPhone 11 that was assembled in India few weeks back, and the iPhone SE 2020 assembled locally should be available sometime next month.

The iPhone 11 did not see any price reduction, so it is doubtful if the new iPhone SE will get a price cut immediately. Producing the new iPhone in India could possibly save Apple import duties.

In the past, Apple has manufactured the iPhone Xs, iPhone SE (2016) and the iPhone 7 in India. Earlier reports said that Apple is looking to produce the iPhone 11 Pro models in Foxconn, Chennai. This would mark a significant shift in iPhone production out of China and into India, where Apple is drawn to the benefits of the Government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

In a statement Apple said:

iPhone SE packs our most powerful chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price, and we’re excited to be making it in India for our local customers.
