Google at the I/O 2017 announced Android Go for low-cost Android devices that have 512MB to 1GB of RAM offering smooth and efficient software experience, better data management, better saving and more. Today at the Google For India 2017 in the country it has announced that this will be called Android Oreo (Go edition) and will be based on Android 8.1 (Oreo).
In addition to smoother software experience, it will also include new Google apps – Google Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, YouTube Go, Google Assistant Go, Files Go along with custom experiences for Gboard, Chrome, as well as a tuned version of the Google Play Store that also highlights the apps designed to work best on the Go edition devices, in addition to other apps.
Google said that the Android Oreo (Go edition) is optimized to deliver 15% faster performance, security, data management and 2x more storage, thanks to fewer pre-installed apps and smaller sizes.
Sameer Samat, VP, Product Management, Google said that devices from partners will be shipped in the next few months and OS source code for Android Oreo (Go edition) has been open sourced today as a part of Android 8.1 Oreo. Smartphones running Android Oreo (Go edition) will be available early 2018.
