Facebook posts $7.4 billion profit, up 6.78% YoY in Q4 2019, MAUs up 8%

Facebook has reported a good year for 2019 as it released its Q4 2019 earnings report. The total earnings posted for this quarter was $21082 million which amounts to a YoY growth of about 24.64% from Q4 2018. The net income on the other hand, was reported at $7349 million which calculates to an increase of approx. 6.78% YoY.

Google Translate will soon offer live transcription on Android

During a demonstration of Artificial Intelligence demos at its San Francisco office, Google showed a prototype feature that is in development for Google Translate called Live Transcription. The feature, if it finally arrives to the public, will allow users to speak in one language and transcribe it to another language in real time on Google Translate.

Vine founder Don Hoffman launches Byte App; another 6-second video platform

Ever since Vine was shut down back in 2016, the internet has been yearning for some short form video sharing service. Now Vine’s founder, Don Hoffman has announced the launch of a successor to Vine called the Byte App. It is similar to Vine in that it is a platform for shooting or uploading and then sharing 6-second videos on the internet.

Telegram v5.14 update brings Polls 2.0 with Visible Votes, Multiple Answers, Quiz mode and more

Telegram has now been updated with version 5.14 and the new update brings Polls 2.0, the option to modify chat bubble corners and a download progress bar for Android. Polls 2.0 brings a lot of nice features like the ability to see who voted for what, polls with multiple answers and a neat little quiz type poll.

Twitter Direct Messages gets support for emoji reactions

Twitter has been making changes to its mobile app as well as the desktop version with new features like Reddit-like conversation layout for replies, Hide Replies, ability to follow specific topics, Snooze feature, and more. WhatsApp for Android beta finally brings dark theme — Here’s how to enable it

WhatsApp beta for Android has been updated to version 2.20.13 that finally brings dark mode feature that has been in the works for more than a year. This lets users choose from light or dark theme. The dark theme is more like dark gray unlike pure black available in some apps. Chats appear with dark background, and your messages are shown in green bubbles.

Instagram’s Boomerang update brings Echo, Slomo and Duo effects along with video trimmer

Instagram’s Boomerang has finally received an update with 3 new effects since it was launched almost 5 years ago. There are 3 new effects including Slomo, Echo and Duo as part of its editing suite along with the option to trim the boomerang video via an iPhone camera roll-styled editor.

The update comes at a time where Instagram’s user base becomes threatened with the rising popularity of TikTok and resurgence of Snapchat. TikTok already a multitude of filters and features in its app that has proven to be very popular among users, creating tons of memes and content for the internet. In a move to stay relevant, Instagram has updated its Boomerang feature with 3 new effects and a new video editor with trim support.

The three new effects are:

  • SlowMo – The effect slows down the video by 50%, essentially making the clip play for about 2 seconds in each direction instead of the usual 1 second.
  • Echo – With this effect, Instagram will add motion blur to the boomerang video, similar to a drunk double vision effect with trails behind every objects movement.
  • Duo – This effect will speed up the backward playback of the boomerang, quickly rewinding to the start of the video along with a glitchy, digitized look.

And lastly, Instagram has also added the option to trim your boomerang video with controls similar to the iPhone video editor or Instagram feed video composer. These new effects will help garner new interest in boomerang videos that have become a bit stale in recent times.
