With more and more smartphones released on the market each year, it becomes even more difficult for a handset to stand out from the competition. Some manufacturers have attempted to attract customers using specialist software and hardware features – like the S Pen on the Galaxy Note 4 – but for others, standing out has been difficult and we’ve seen many companies struggle to make their mark.
In the case of Russian company Yota, they saw an opportunity to show that e-ink displays – which have been present on eReaders for a while now – could also be used in a smartphone and whilst the YotaPhone was designed like a wedge, the YotaPhone 2 aims to be different by offering a Full colour display and a unique e-ink display all in one smartphone. Yota Devices launched the YotaPhone 2 in Russia yesterday. It was officially launched at an event in London few hours back. Originally announced at the MWC earlier this year, the YotaPhone 2 has a a 5-inch (1920 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED display, is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat). It has a full-touch control on its always-on electronic paper display (EPD) on the other side. The full-touch E Paper screen offers up to 50 hours of battery life when reading on the always-on display. Yota Devices announced the YotaPhone 2 back in February at the MWC. Last month the company announced that the smartphone would be launched at an event in London on December 3rd. It launched the smartphone at an event in Russia today and it is priced at 32,990 Rubles (US$605 / 490 Euros approx). It is available for purchase from the official online store in Russia. At the event the company’s CEO confirmed to Sputnik that it will go on sale in Europe this week. It will roll out in 20 European countries this year and will go on sale in China and the rest of Asia-Pacific early 2015 with Canada and Latin America later. This year the launch event for the YotaPhone 2 is set for December 3rd in London. It will be an invitation-only event, says YotaPhone. The first YotaPhone with dual display was announced in MWC 2013 and they went on sale in December. Fast forward a year and they are here at MWC 2014 announcing the second generation YotaPhone. Unlike the original YotaPhone, the second generation YotaPhone is packed with top of the shelf specifications and has everything in it to compete with the top end smartphones.

Yota Devices, a Russia-based company, popular for its Dual-Screen YotaPhone has started teasing about their MWC launch next week. On their Facebook page, it said, ” You will be blown away when you see what we’ll unveil next week at MWC in Barcelona.” This doesn’t confirm anything, but a recent report from a Russian website hi-tech.mail.ru and Russian daily Kommersant reveals that the YotaPhone 2 would arrive at MWC 2014.
