Google Wallet adds Aadhaar digital ID support in India, expands ID passes globally

Google has expanded its digital identity features through updates to Google Wallet, adding support for Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials and extending passport-based digital ID capabilities.

Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials

Google Wallet now supports Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials through its partnership with UIDAI. Users can store their Aadhaar-based identity directly on their device, creating a secure, digital-first ID.

This enables faster identity verification for everyday use without needing physical documents, according to Alan Stapelberg, Group Product Manager, Google Wallet.

The system is built on global standards and includes privacy-focused features such as selective disclosure, where only required details are shared during verification. This ensures secure identity usage across both physical and digital environments.

Partner integrations and use cases

The Aadhaar-based digital ID is being integrated across multiple services:

  • PVR INOX – verify age for movies and access rewards
  • BharatMatrimony – verified ‘Prime’ profiles for matchmaking
  • Atlys – auto-fill international visa applications
  • Mygate – upcoming verification for delivery and service personnel in residential communities
  • Snabbit – planned identity checks for gig and service providers
ID pass feature

Google is also expanding its “ID pass” system, which allows users to create a secure digital ID using passport information. These ID passes can be used for identity or age verification across in-person and online services, including signing into accounts.

Availability

Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials are now supported in India within Google Wallet. The ID pass feature is available for users in Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil.
