Android 16 QPR3 brings connected display support

The Android 16 QPR3 release brings connected display support to general availability, marking a notable shift in how Android devices interact with external hardware. First demonstrated at Google I/O 2025, this feature allows users to connect supported Android devices to external monitors, activating a desktop windowing environment designed for multitasking.

Connected Display Functionality

Developed through a collaboration between Google and Samsung, the connected display feature provides a desktop-like experience on external screens. When a supported Android phone or foldable is connected to a monitor, a new desktop session initiates.

Key features of this environment include:

  • Taskbar Integration: A taskbar displays active applications and allows users to pin frequently used apps.
  • Free-form Windowing: Users can run multiple applications side by side in freely resizable or maximized windows.
  • Extended Display: For devices that natively support desktop windowing (such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11), the desktop session extends across both the device and the external monitor. The two screens function as a continuous system, allowing the cursor and app windows to move freely between them.
System and Developer Adjustments

The Android 16 QPR3 release finalizes several core behaviors for the connected display experience, including taskbar interactions, input compatibility for mouse and keyboard, and windowing mechanics. The update also integrates compatibility treatments designed to properly scale windows and prevent apps from restarting when users switch between displays.

Applications built with adaptive design principles will automatically conform to the desktop interface, while apps locked to portrait mode or built exclusively for touch interfaces may require updates for optimal performance.

Availability

Android 16 QPR3 update with connected display support is currently rolling out to Pixel 8 and newer devices as part of the March 2026 Pixel Drop that also brings the March 2026 security patch.
