IDC: Mobile Phone Market Q2 2012 – Samsung, Apple top Smartphone vendors by shipments


Samsung, Nokia and Apple are the leading Mobile vendors by shipments once again in Q2 2012, according to a report by Research Firm IDC (International Data Corporation). Mobile phone market grew 1% year over year in Q2 2012 with worldwide shipments of 406.0 million units compared to 401.8 million units in Q2 2011.

Samsung and Apple are leading Smartphone vendors based on shipments, and Samsung has increased the lead with Apple. Samsung has shipped 50.2 million units which is almost double than Apple with 26 million units which is also a record for most smartphones shipped in a single quarter. Nokia is still in the 3rd place with 10.2 million unit shipments and 6.6% market share, which is 38.9% less than Q2 2011. RIM, which was in the 4th place last quarter (Q1 2012) has disappeared due to the arrival of ZTE in top 5 for the first time. HTC moved to 4th place but the market share is 24.1% less compared to Q2 2011.

Overall the smartphone segment has seen 42.1% year-over-year growth with 153.9 million smartphone shipped in Q2 2012 compared to 108.3 million units in Q2 2011.

The above table indicates worldwide mobile phone shipments in Q2 2012. The order is similar to that of the last quarter with Nokia and LG has seen a decline in the market share. Samsung tops with 97.8 million shipments with 29.7% increase compared to Q2 2011. Nokia is in the 2nd spot with 83.7 million shipments with the market share of 5.4% less than Q2 2011. Apple is the 3rd spot, followed by ZTE and LG.
