Sony has announced two major shifts in its digital and physical distribution strategies, marking a significant transition in how the company supports both upcoming hardware and legacy ecosystems.
Beginning in January 2028, Sony will entirely discontinue the production of physical game discs for all new PlayStation releases. Concurrently, the company outlined a phased timeline to permanently close the legacy PlayStation Store on both the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PlayStation Vita platforms.
The Shift away from Physical Media
Starting January 2028, all new titles releasing on PlayStation consoles will be distributed exclusively in digital formats. Players will be able to purchase upcoming releases directly through the digital PlayStation Store or via digital download codes sold through traditional retail channels.
According to the announcement, the decision aligns with broader entertainment industry trends and an ongoing shift in consumer behavior, where digital media consumption significantly outpaces physical disc sales. The company noted that the transition is intended to streamline resources to match current community preferences for accessing and playing games.
The policy change will not affect physical media retroactively. All PlayStation games released on disc prior to the January 2028 cutoff will remain fully playable on compatible disc-drive consoles. Sony stated that it will continue to work with retailers to provide purchasing choices for digital formats moving forward.
Legacy Closures: PS3 and PS Vita Stores
After nearly two decades of operation, the digital PlayStation Store storefronts for the PS3 and the handheld PS Vita will be retired. Sony cited the evolution of modern commerce systems and updated payment processing standards as the primary drivers for the decision, noting that the older hardware can no longer support these security and infrastructure updates at the required level.
The closures will roll out globally across a multi-stage timeline:
- August 2026: PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
- Late 2026: Closures expand to additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries for the PS3 storefront.
- July 2027: Global termination of the PlayStation Store for both the PS3 and PS Vita across all remaining markets.
Once a storefront closes in a specific region, users will no longer be able to make new digital purchases or buy in-game content on that device. However, to ease the transition for long-time users, Sony confirmed that players will retain the ability to redownload and play their previously purchased software and media libraries for the foreseeable future.
Acknowledging the impact on preservation and nostalgic attachment to these console generations, Sony stated that the decision allows the company to reallocate engineering and operational resources toward enhancing services and developing experiences for newer, active platforms.
