Sony LYTIA 610 64MP 1/2″ sensor with RB2×2 OCL tech, up to 4K 120fps video recording announced

Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (Sony) has announced the upcoming release of the LYTIA 610, a 1/2-type stacked CMOS image sensor designed for mobile applications. Featuring approximately 64 effective megapixels, the sensor is the industry’s first product with an RB2×2 On-Chip Lens (OCL) pixel structure to enter mass production.

Technical Innovation: The RB2×2 OCL Structure

The core innovation of the LYTIA 610 is its unique pixel architecture, which balances high spatial resolution with autofocus (AF) performance. Within a Quad Bayer array sensor, Sony has integrated two distinct OCL designs on a single surface:

  • 1×1 OCL Structure: Applied to the Green (G) pixels, which primarily contribute to image definition, to maximize resolution.
  • 2×2 OCL Structure: Applied to the Red (R) and Blue (B) pixels. In this configuration, four pixels share a single lens, allowing them to function as phase-detection pixels to improve AF speed and accuracy.

To maximize the capabilities of this hybrid layout, Sony developed a dedicated remosaicing (array conversion) processing algorithm. According to the company, this combination of optimized hardware and signal processing delivers a spatial resolution improvement of more than 20% compared to Sony’s conventional sensors of the same pixel size, making it highly suitable for telephoto camera applications.

Expanded Video Capabilities

The LYTIA 610 introduces several hardware optimizations to improve data readout speeds, including energy-efficient logic circuits and an optimized, parallelized analog-to-digital (AD) converter. These updates allow the sensor to achieve a readout speed double that of Sony’s conventional 1/2-type sensors.

As a result, the LYTIA 610 is the first 1/2-type sensor from Sony to support 4K video recording at 120 frames per second (fps), enabling smooth high-speed capture and high-quality slow-motion video. Additionally, the sensor supports 4K 60 fps DAG-HDR video recording for high-contrast environments.

By upgrading the capabilities of this secondary-tier sensor size, Sony aims to reduce the performance and image quality gaps between a smartphone’s main camera and its sub-cameras (such as telephoto or ultra-wide lenses), creating a more uniform multi-lens user experience.
