Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced plans to upgrade its in-flight internet connectivity by integrating Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband service. The progressive rollout across select aircraft is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
Technology and Network Capabilities
The transition to Starlink, which operates a network of more than 10,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, is designed to deliver multi-gigabit connectivity to in-flight aircraft. SIA will equip its planes with Starlink’s Aero Terminal, hardware that supports data speeds of up to 1 Gbps per antenna.
This infrastructure upgrade aims to provide consistent, gate-to-gate connectivity from take-off to landing. Passengers across all cabin classes will have the bandwidth capacity to support data-intensive activities, including: Video streaming, Online gaming, Social media content sharing and Transferring and sending large files.
Fleet Integration
The Starlink broadband service will not be deployed fleet-wide immediately but will be progressively introduced to specific widebody models. The targeted aircraft include:
- Airbus A350-900 Long-Haul (LH)
- Airbus A350-900 Ultra-Long-Range (ULR)
- Airbus A380
Access and Complimentary Service Tiers
With the introduction of the new hardware, SIA will maintain its existing complimentary Wi-Fi policy on all Starlink-enabled aircraft. Unlimited, complimentary internet access will continue to be provided to the following customer segments:
- Passengers ticketed in Suites, First Class, and Business Class.
- PPS Club members.
- KrisFlyer members traveling in Premium Economy Class or Economy Class.
